When you actually need a heavy duty 2 post lift
The cutoff we use is simple: if your heaviest regular vehicle is over 8,000 lb, you want a heavy duty 2 post lift, not a standard 10K. A crew-cab diesel, a loaded work van, a fleet Sprinter, or a modern EV crossover will all push a 10K lift closer to its limit than most owners realize. Batteries add real weight — a mid-size electric SUV can crest 6,200 lb empty.
The safe move for any shop touching modern vehicles is a 15K or 18K unit. We had a collision shop caller from central Iowa asking specifically for a 16,000 lb EV-compliant 2-post — that shop knew what its future work looked like and did not want to buy the wrong lift twice. If you are speccing a bay you will use for a decade, size up.
Capacities and column heights we sell
A heavy duty 2 post lift generally lives in three capacity brackets: 15,000 lb, 18,000 lb, and 20,000-plus for true heavy service. On top of that, you pick a column height. Standard columns run around 163 inches. Tall columns run 193 inches or more and are the right call for lifted trucks, box vans, and any shop with a ceiling over 15 feet.
The Rotary SPO18, Challenger CL15, and BendPak XPR-15CL are the models we quote most often at 15K. At 18K, we lean on the Rotary SPOA18 and Challenger CL18. Above 20K, PKS heavy-duty pistons take over — we have installed those in truck shops and municipal fleet buildings. Column height matters more than most buyers guess; we walk every buyer through door-height math on the phone.
EV compliance and battery pack weight
EV-compliant means the swing-arm geometry and pad heights can reach the reinforced factory lift points on modern electric vehicles without touching the battery pack. Almost every 2-post from the last three model years handles this by default, but you should still ask the question. A shop that installs a heavy duty 2 post lift today and gets an EV lift-point call five years from now needs adapters — not a lift replacement.
The models we recommend for EV work all ship with, or optionally take, the tall pad extensions that clear rocker skirts on Teslas and Rivians. If your shop is planning ADAS calibrations or EV service, tell us at the quote stage. The extra $150 for the right pad kit is easier to spend up front than to add later when a customer’s F-150 Lightning is already on the arms.
Baseplate vs overhead on a heavy duty 2 post lift
At heavy capacities, most shops go with an overhead 2-post because you keep the floor between the columns clear. That matters when you roll a transmission jack, an alignment rack, or a large drain pan under a big truck. Overhead crossover means you need 145 to 158 inches of clearance depending on the model and column height.
Baseplate versions of the same heavy duty 2 post lift exist for shops with 12 to 13 foot ceilings, common in older Iowa buildings retrofitted for automotive work. The trade-off is a low bar between the columns that a floor jack has to lift over. Rotary, Challenger, and PKS: where they differ
Rotary is the workhorse brand for dealer service drives and Iowa collision shops we visit weekly. The SPOA10 in the 10K class and the SPOA18 at 18K are known quantities — the parts pipeline is deep and the resale value holds. Challenger runs a close second and prices slightly friendlier, with the CL15 being a favorite for mid-size independent shops.
PKS is the answer when a standard heavy duty 2 post lift is not enough. Municipal shops, fire-truck bays, and dump-truck operations need 30,000 or 40,000 lb piston lifts — those live in the PKS lineup we sell. If your shop touches Class 6 or Class 7 vehicles regularly, we quote PKS or a 4-post equivalent instead of pushing a 20K 2-post past its comfort zone. Different tool for a different job.

A 15K to 18K 2-post generally ships from our Iowa warehouse within one to two weeks. Install for a commercial shop takes our crew about a day per lift on prepared concrete. We handle the anchors, the electrical hookup, the ANSI check, and the first cycle test. After the install, we stock every wear part — cables, hoses, safety locks, arm restraints — for at least 15 years past the sale.
