Start With Gross Vehicle Weight, Not Curb Weight
The number on the door jamb is not the number that matters. A tandem-axle dump truck might weigh 18,000 lb empty and 54,000 lb loaded, and shops do not always get to service them empty. Snow-removal fleets in central Iowa are the classic example: a truck comes in mid-February with a full hopper of sand because nobody wants to spend two hours dumping it before an inspection. If your lift was specified against curb weight, you now have a piece of equipment you cannot legally use on your own vehicle.
Our rule of thumb is to spec against gross vehicle weight rating and then add margin. For most medium-duty fleets that means 26,000 to 30,000 lb of usable capacity. For Class 8 tractors, buses, and refuse trucks, we are usually talking about four or six mobile columns at 18,000 to 20,000 lb each, which puts total capacity in the 72,000 to 120,000 lb range. Also think about weight distribution — a fire apparatus or a boom truck carries its mass very unevenly, and per-column loading matters as much as the total. A heavy-duty two-post, on the other hand, is always ready. No batteries to charge, no columns to stage, no floor space consumed when the lift is not in use. Shops doing repetitive work on a consistent vehicle mix — a school bus garage, a straight-truck fleet — often prefer the speed of walking in and swinging arms under the truck. The tradeoff is a hard ceiling on vehicle size and a permanent commitment of that bay. Concrete and Floor Requirements Nobody Reads Until Install Day
We have shown up to more than one install where the building was beautiful and the slab was not. Heavy-duty equipment puts enormous point loads into concrete, and manufacturer specs are not suggestions. Depending on the model you are typically looking at 6 inches or more of properly cured concrete at a minimum compressive strength in the 3,000 to 4,000 psi range, with adequate distance from expansion joints, saw cuts, and slab edges. Older Iowa shop buildings — especially anything converted from farm or grain use — frequently have 4-inch slabs with no reinforcement and no documentation of what is underneath.
The fix is not complicated, but it has to happen before the truck shows up with your lift on it. We core-test or cut inspection holes, and if the slab is short we pour footings sized to the manufacturer’s drawing. For mobile columns there is a second consideration people forget: the whole floor is your work surface, so it needs to be flat, sound, and free of the crumbling patches that develop where salt-loaded trucks park all winter. Power, Air, and Electrical Planning
Heavy-duty lifting equipment is not a plug-in appliance. Air matters too if you are specifying air-release safety locks or air-over-hydraulic components; a small, tired compressor that struggles to keep up with impact guns will not reliably release a bank of locks. The equipment number on a quote is rarely the number you actually spend. Freight on a six-column set is significant — this is thousands of pounds of steel arriving on a flatbed that needs a forklift or a dock. Rigging and placement inside a tight building can add time. Then there is the ongoing side: annual ALI-standard inspection, hydraulic fluid, seals, and the occasional cable or chain. Budget for it as a line item rather than an emergency.
