Start With What You Actually Lift, Not What You Might Lift Someday
The first mistake we see in heavy duty lift selection is buying capacity for a hypothetical fleet truck that never shows up while underbuying for the Super Duty trucks and box trucks that roll through the bay every week. Pull your last twelve months of repair orders and look at the heaviest, longest, widest vehicles you actually serviced. That’s your baseline, not your ceiling and not your fantasy.
From there, add a real margin. If your heaviest regular vehicle is a one-ton dually at 10,000-12,000 lbs curb weight, a 12,000 lb rated lift is cutting it close once you account for uneven weight distribution and aftermarket bumpers, tool boxes, and service bodies. We generally push shops toward 15,000-18,000 lb capacity for that class of work, and higher if fleet accounts or ag equipment are part of the plan. Two Post vs Four Post for Heavy Duty Work
Two post lifts dominate heavy duty selection because they free up floor space and give techs full underbody access for driveline, exhaust, and suspension work. Four post lifts earn their place when the job is alignment, storage, or rolling a vehicle on and off without the arm-and-pad setup a two post requires. If you’re servicing lifted trucks, dually pickups with wide track widths, or vehicles where finding safe lift points is a constant headache, a four post drive-on platform removes that variable entirely. Some heavy duty shops run both configurations side by side — two post for speed on routine work, four post for alignment and long-term storage. Your lift selection should match your actual workflow, not just your budget.
Ceiling Height and Floor Thickness Aren’t Optional Math
We turn away more heavy duty installs on ceiling height than almost any other single factor. A 15,000-18,000 lb two post lift with a raised truck at full height can need well over 14 feet of clearance. Measure your actual bay height, including any HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, or lighting fixtures hanging down, before you fall in love with a specific model.
Floor thickness and concrete condition matter just as much and get ignored far more often. Heavy duty lifts anchor into slab, and a lift rated for 15,000+ lbs needs a slab thickness and PSI rating that a lot of older Iowa shop buildings simply don’t have without reinforcement. We core sample or review engineering specs before every heavy duty install because guessing here isn’t an option — a lift that’s undersupported by the slab is a liability regardless of how good the lift itself is. Arm Configuration and Reach for Trucks and Vans
Standard arm lengths on many two post lifts weren’t designed with the wheelbase of a modern extended-cab or crew-cab truck in mind. When you’re narrowing down heavy duty lift selection, check the arm reach specification against your longest regularly-serviced vehicle, not just its weight rating. A lift can be rated heavy enough on paper and still not physically reach the frame lift points on a longer wheelbase truck.
Asymmetric arm designs also matter more for heavy duty work than passenger car use, because trucks and vans have different frame geometry and door swing clearance needs. Look for lifts with adjustable, multi-stage arms that give you flexibility across your whole fleet mix rather than a single vehicle type. We’ve swapped out more than one lift for a shop that bought based on tonnage alone and then discovered the arms simply couldn’t reach the lift points on half their trucks.
Hydraulic vs Cable-Driven Systems at Heavy Capacities
At heavy duty capacities, the drive system affects both maintenance load and long-term reliability. Cable-driven two post lifts are common and cost-effective, but at higher tonnage the cables and sheaves see more wear and need closer inspection intervals. Hydraulic and hydraulic-cylinder hybrid designs common in Challenger’s heavier lines shift some of that load differently and can mean fewer moving parts subject to fatigue at full capacity.
Neither system is universally right — the correct answer depends on your duty cycle. A shop running a heavy duty lift twenty-plus times a day needs a different maintenance conversation than one using it five times a week. Ask your installer directly what the inspection and cable replacement intervals look like at the capacity you’re buying, and get that in writing as part of your heavy duty lift selection process, not as an afterthought after installation.
