This heavy duty truck lift guide comes out of a conversation we have almost every week from our shop in Ames, Iowa: a fleet manager or a diesel shop owner calls us because their 12,000 lb two-post finally met a truck it could not handle. Maybe it was a Class 6 rollback, maybe a loaded service body, maybe a tandem-axle dump that nobody wanted to admit was too much. Lifting heavy trucks is a different discipline than lifting cars — the math is different, the concrete is different, the ceiling is different, and the consequences of guessing wrong are a lot more expensive. Start With Real Axle Weights, Not the GVWR Sticker

The single most common mistake we see is capacity chosen off a GVWR number pulled from a door jamb. GVWR tells you what the truck is legally rated to weigh fully loaded — it does not tell you how that weight sits on the ground, and it does not account for the bodies and equipment your shop actually services. A cab-and-chassis at 26,000 lb GVWR that came back as a mechanic’s truck with a crane, compressor, and a bed full of tooling can arrive at your door heavier on the front axle than the spec sheet ever suggested.

What we ask for instead is scale weights, axle by axle, on the heaviest units in the fleet. Then we look at how those axles distribute across the lifting points. With a four-column mobile set, each column carries roughly one wheel position, so a 60,000 lb capacity set means 15,000 lb per column — but only if the load is balanced. Front-heavy trucks with light rears routinely put more on two columns than a buyer expects. We add margin on top of the real number, not on top of the optimistic one. Mobile Columns vs. Inground vs. Four-Post

Three families cover almost every heavy truck shop. Mobile column lifts are the workhorse: sets of four, six, or eight wireless or cabled columns that you roll into position, sync electronically, and lift the whole vehicle by the wheels. They handle wheelbase variation better than anything else, they store against a wall when you need the bay for something else, and adding two more columns later scales your capacity without pouring new concrete.

Inground heavy-duty lifts — piston or scissor style — give you a clean floor and unobstructed access to the undercarriage, which is why transit garages and municipal shops keep specifying them. The tradeoff is excavation, drainage, and a permanent commitment to one bay layout. Four-post heavy-duty lifts sit in the middle: fixed installation, drive-on convenience, excellent for alignment and inspection work, less flexible for a shop that sees everything from a dually pickup to a tandem. Concrete: The Part Nobody Budgets For

We have turned down installs over concrete more times than over anything else. Heavy-duty equipment concentrates enormous load into a small footprint, and a slab that has handled cars for thirty years is not automatically ready for a 60,000 lb set. Manufacturers publish minimum thickness and compressive strength for a reason, and for heavy configurations you are typically looking at thicker slabs and higher PSI than a standard two-post requires — plus adequate distance from expansion joints, trench drains, and slab edges.

The good news is that mobile columns spread load across four to eight points and are considerably more forgiving than a fixed two-post that anchors everything into two baseplates. That flexibility is one of the quiet reasons mobile sets dominate fleet shops in Iowa, where a lot of buildings went up before anybody imagined servicing Class 8 trucks indoors. Still, we core-test when there is any doubt. A core sample and a couple of hours of our time cost a fraction of what it costs to cut out and repour a bay after the fact. Ceiling Height, Bay Length, and the Rest of the Envelope

Capacity gets all the attention, but envelope kills more projects. Lift a Class 7 truck to full rise and you need the cab roof, exhaust stack, and any roof-mounted equipment to clear your lowest obstruction — sprinkler heads, light fixtures, radiant tube heaters, overhead door tracks in the open position. We measure to the lowest thing in the bay, not the peak of the truss.

Bay length matters just as much. A tandem-axle truck plus room to open the hood plus room to walk behind the rear axle adds up fast, and if you are running six columns you need a path to roll them in and out without playing Tetris around a bench. We also look at power: heavy-duty column sets and inground units frequently want 208-230V three-phase, and if your building only has single-phase we will tell you that on the site visit rather than on install day. Door width, floor slope, and drain placement round out the list. Adapters, Wheel Forks, and the Accessories That Do the Work

The columns are only half the system. Wheel-engaging forks come in different widths and depths, and the tire sizes in a mixed fleet — super singles, duals, wide-base agricultural rubber — determine which fork set you need. Order the wrong adapters and a technically correct lift becomes unusable on half your vehicles.

For fixed lifts, adapter kits, truck adapters, and extended pads let you reach frame rails on trucks that sit far off the ground. We stock these because they are the parts customers forget until the truck is already in the bay. Support stands matter too: once a truck is up, most shops want it on stands so the columns can be freed for the next unit, and the stand rating has to match the load you are transferring. Add jack trays, air lines, and lighting and you have a system that actually works instead of a lift that technically lifts. Inspection, Maintenance, and Staying ANSI-Compliant

ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards call for annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and in a heavy-duty shop that is not a formality. We inspect chains, cables, hydraulic hoses, fittings, locks, synchronization systems, and battery packs on mobile sets — and battery health is the number one thing we find neglected. A column set with tired batteries loses sync, which stresses the frame and the technicians’ patience at the same time.

Day to day, the maintenance list is short and non-negotiable: keep the columns clean, keep the forks free of debris, check hydraulic fluid, watch for weeping fittings, and charge batteries on a schedule instead of when they die. Document everything. When an insurance adjuster or a DOT auditor asks, a maintenance log is the difference between a quick conversation and a long one.
