What Actually Qualifies as “Heavy Duty”
In the lift world, heavy duty isn’t a marketing word, it’s a weight capacity rating stamped on the equipment. Consumer 4-post and 2-post lifts typically top out around 10,000-12,000 lbs, which covers most trucks fine until you start loading them with service bodies, plows, or trailers. True heavy duty truck lifts start in the 15,000 lb range and climb well past 30,000 lb for shops that handle dump trucks, RVs, and Class 7-8 vocational vehicles. We ask every shop we quote what their heaviest vehicle actually weighs loaded, not empty, because that number is what should drive the capacity decision.
We also look at axle spacing and wheelbase, since a long wheelbase grain truck or a walk-in van needs runway length and post spacing that a standard pickup lift doesn’t have. Sets of four, six, or eight wireless columns work together to lift a truck by its wheels, and because they’re mobile, the same set can service a delivery van one day and a heavy straight truck the next, as long as the combined capacity and wheelbase range covers both. Capacity Math: Don’t Just Look at the Sticker
A lift’s rated capacity is a total, not a guarantee of even weight distribution, and heavy trucks rarely load evenly. A truck with a full water tank on one side or a mounted crane will put more weight on certain columns or arms than others. We always recommend buying a step above your heaviest anticipated load rather than right at the edge, because real-world weight distribution eats into your safety margin faster than most shop owners expect. This is especially true for shops that plan to grow into bigger trucks over the next few years.
We also see shops make the mistake of averaging their fleet’s weight instead of designing around the heaviest single vehicle they’ll ever put on the lift. One dump truck or one loaded service body vehicle should set your minimum capacity, not your fleet average. Electrical and hydraulic runs also scale up with capacity, since bigger cylinders and motors draw more power and need larger hydraulic lines than what a typical home garage circuit provides.
