Why Concrete Is the First Question, Not an Afterthought

Every heavy duty two post lift installation starts underground, not with the columns. Manufacturers spec a minimum slab thickness, cure time, and PSI rating for a reason — the anchor bolts are only as strong as the concrete holding them. For a 12,000 lb lift you might get away with a 4-inch slab in good shape, but push into 18,000, 25,000, or 30,000+ lb capacities and most manufacturers want 5 to 6 inches of properly cured, crack-free concrete with no rebar in the anchor zone.

We’ve walked into more than a few Iowa shops where the existing slab was poured decades ago for a lighter-duty lift, and the owner wanted to drop in a heavier column lift without touching the floor. Sometimes it works. Often it doesn’t, and we find that out with a core sample before anyone spends money on equipment. Ceiling Height, Bay Width, and the Math Nobody Wants to Do

A 30,000 lb lift built for Class 6-8 trucks can need well over 14 feet of ceiling height, and that’s before you account for the vehicle’s own height once it’s raised. We measure twice before quoting because a lift that looks great on paper can be a foot too tall for your bay.

Bay width matters just as much. Heavy-duty columns are wider and set further apart than light-duty two post lifts, and you need clearance on both sides for the arms to swing fully under a straight axle or a dually. We also factor in door swing, adjacent lift spacing, and whether you’ll run the lift with a wheel-contact or frame-contact configuration, since that changes the working footprint. Skipping this math is how shops end up with a lift installed in the wrong spot, unable to service the very trucks it was bought for.

Anchoring: The Step That Gets Rushed Most Often

We see more corner-cutting on anchoring than on any other part of a heavy duty two post lift installation. The torque spec on those anchor bolts is not a suggestion — under-torqued anchors can pull loose under load, and over-torqued anchors can crack the surrounding concrete before the lift ever lifts anything. Every anchor gets set to spec, torque-tested, and documented on our end, because that documentation is what an OSHA or insurance inspector will ask for.

We also check anchor spacing against slab edges and existing cracks, expansion joints, and any embedded conduit or drain lines that a shop owner might not know about until a bolt hits one. On heavier lifts, some manufacturers require adhesive anchors instead of standard wedge anchors for better hold in certain concrete conditions. Getting this step wrong doesn’t always fail immediately — sometimes it fails six months later with a vehicle in the air, which is the outcome every reputable installer is working to prevent.

Electrical, Hydraulics, and Getting the Startup Right

A heavy duty two post lift installation isn’t finished when the columns are bolted down. The power unit needs correct voltage and amperage matched to the motor, properly sized breakers, and in many shops a dedicated circuit run rather than a shared one that trips under load. We coordinate directly with electricians on this so the lift isn’t waiting on a mismatched panel three weeks after the mechanical install is done.

Hydraulic lines get bled and checked for leaks at every fitting, cables get tensioned evenly so both columns rise in sync, and the safety locks get tested through a full cycle before we hand the lift over. We run a load test with an actual vehicle, not just an empty cycle, because that’s the only way to confirm the lift behaves correctly under real weight. Cables stretch, hydraulic seals age, and columns that were fine in their last location can reveal wear once they’re re-anchored and cycled under load again. We inspect used lifts closely before installation and won’t sign off on one that isn’t safe to run, even if the shop already paid for it. That conversation is uncomfortable, but it’s better than the alternative.
