The First Call: More Questions Than Answers

He had a mixed fleet — a few project trucks, a couple of daily-driven pickups, and one heavier truck with a job box he used for hauling equipment to shows. A standard two-post heavy truck lift with a tall overhead beam can eat more vertical space than people expect, especially older designs with a fixed cross beam. His overhead door was wide enough for the truck, but the driveway approach had a slight grade change right at the threshold, which meant backing a truck with a job box and equipment rack into the building took more care than a flat commercial lot would. We talked through post placement relative to the door so he wouldn’t be threading a needle every time he pulled a truck in for service — nobody wants to nick a mirror or a door edge on a post because the lift was centered without accounting for the actual approach.
We also accounted for door swing on the truck’s own doors once it was positioned on the lift. We set the posts using the adjusted centerline from our earlier site visit, ran the hydraulics, and calibrated the arms for both his lighter project trucks and his heavier equipment-hauling truck, since a heavy truck lift needs arm positions that work across a range of vehicle types if that’s how it’ll actually get used.
The whole install took the better part of a day, including electrical hookup for the power unit and a full function test cycling the lift empty before ever putting a vehicle on it.
