A vehicle collector in the Iowa-Illinois corridor called us two summers ago about a home car lift for garage installation in the tallest bay of a five-car detached shop he had recently built. The shop he built and what he asked for
His shop was purpose-built for collector cars: sixty by forty, four overhead doors, sixteen-foot side walls with a truss ceiling that peaked at twenty-two feet. Impressive on paper. The catch was that the trusses hung down about three feet from the peak, giving him actual clear height of nineteen feet at the truss centerline. That is plenty for anything, including tall four-post lifts stacked over other cars. His constraint was not the ceiling; it was the overhead door swing on the fourteen-foot-tall bay door directly above his intended lift location.
A sectional overhead door swings up on a curved track. When the door is fully open, the top of the door panel sits roughly eighteen inches inside the shop, slightly below ceiling height, and directly over the parking area. If a two-post column is placed too far forward, the door panel can strike the column on its way up. Modeling the door swing before we ordered
We drove out to his shop before quoting and measured the actual door track geometry. Every overhead door has a manufacturer track profile. A four-post lets you park a car on the runways and store a second car underneath, indefinitely, with no load on the arms or columns beyond what the car weighs. That is exactly what a collector needs. The trade-off is that service access is different. On a two-post the wheels dangle free and you can rotate them and pull them. Add up seventy-five plus sixty-five and you are at one hundred and forty inches, twelve feet, minimum, just to stack cars. That works fine in his nineteen-foot clear-height shop. The other reason to have ceiling height is to reach the top of the parked car for washing, waxing, or covering. Nothing worse than a stored car you cannot dust the roof of because your head is against the truss. He built his shop tall specifically to solve this problem, and it worked. First year of storage: dust, drips, and cover management
