Buying a home car lift for garage storage is the kind of decision a collector agonizes over for months, then wonders why they waited. Model selection — the shortlist we built
The Waterloo collector had a 30×40 pole building with a 12 foot ceiling and a mix of vehicles — two classic muscle cars, a modern daily, and an occasional restoration. Install day — what actually happened
Install ran a full day. We showed up at 8 AM with a two-man crew, a forklift on the trailer, and the lift on a common carrier that met us on-site. The lift comes in five main pieces: two columns, two runways, and the crossbar. We staged them, assembled the columns, connected the crossbar, and lifted the runways into place.
Anchoring took an hour. We drilled the concrete for the wedge anchors, torqued them to spec, and leveled the columns with shims. The hydraulic power unit went in an hour and a half — hose runs, wire the motor, prime the system. Test cycle and safety check took another hour. Total time on-site was about seven hours. First tire rotation — how the rolling jack worked
The first real service was a tire rotation on his modern daily driver two months after the install. He rolled the car onto the lift, raised it to a comfortable working height, and positioned the rolling jack between the runways. The two limits on stacked storage are height (the top car needs to fit under the ceiling with the lift raised) and access (you need to be able to lower the lift with the bottom car in place to get the top car down).
