A mobile mechanic in southwest Iowa wanted to add alignment work to his service menu, and he called us about a home car lift for garage duty that would carry that specific job. Alignments are one of the most lift-dependent jobs in the industry. You cannot do a real four-wheel alignment on jack stands, you cannot do one in a customer’s driveway, and you cannot fudge the geometry. The vehicle needs to be at a stable working height, the wheels need to be level within a very small tolerance, and the arm restraints have to hold the vehicle rock-solid so the alignment heads read true. Why alignment work drives a specific lift choice

An alignment lift is a specific animal. You want a four-post with the runways level to within tight tolerance, you want turn plates at the front, you want slip plates at the rear, and you want a runway length that accommodates cars and pickups. A general-purpose four-post can do alignments with the right accessories bolted on, and a purpose-built alignment lift comes with those accessories from the factory. For a mobile mechanic scaling into a fixed-bay alignment service, the honest answer is often a general-purpose four-post with a bolt-on alignment kit rather than a full-blown factory alignment lift. That approach saves meaningful money and covers 90 percent of the alignment work a mobile mechanic will do.

Where the bolt-on approach falls short is on high-precision alignments for performance vehicles and heavy-duty trucks. For those, a dedicated alignment lift is the honest tool. For everyday passenger-car alignments — the bulk of what a mobile mechanic will see — a four-post with turn plates and slip plates and a level installation does the job. The southwest Iowa shop and what we measured

His shop was a 30×40 pole barn with 14-foot ceilings and a 5-inch concrete slab. That is generous room for any lift. What we cared about for alignment work specifically was slab flatness. Alignment requires the four runway pads to be level within a very small tolerance — roughly a quarter inch across the length of the vehicle. We laser-checked the slab in the bay and found it was level within an eighth inch across 20 feet, which is excellent. On a slab that isn’t level enough, we can shim the columns during install, but it is easier if the slab is right to begin with.

We also measured for column placement to make sure a full-length pickup would fit with the front turn plates positioned correctly. The column-to-column runway length matters here. A shorter runway means you can only align cars and small trucks. A longer runway lets you align full-size crew cabs. He wanted to serve everyday work, so we spec’d a mid-length runway. The lift we quoted and the alignment kit we added

We quoted a 9,000-pound four-post from Rotary with a mid-length runway, level-installed on shimmed pads, plus a bolt-on alignment kit with turn plates for the front axle and slip plates for the rear. The turn plates let the front wheels rotate freely during camber and caster measurement. The slip plates let the rear wheels move slightly during ride-height set. Both are essential for real alignment work.

Total quote landed higher than a bare four-post but well below a dedicated alignment lift. For a mobile mechanic adding alignments as a new service line, the math was clean. He needed to do a specific volume of alignments per month to justify the upgrade, and he expected to hit that in his first six months based on the demand he was already declining as a mobile mechanic. Install day and the level-set process

Install ran a day and a half instead of the usual one day, because leveling for alignment work is not the same as leveling for general use. If the runways aren’t level, every alignment reads wrong and the mechanic never trusts the equipment.

Once the lift was leveled, we cycled it through its full range and checked runway level at three heights — low, mid, and full. The runways should be level at every height, not just at the ground. On a well-installed four-post with quality construction, they will be. On a cheap lift, they won’t, and the mechanic will chase alignment ghosts forever. We verified with a laser at each stop and the runways held to spec across the range. That was the moment we knew the alignment setup was going to work. Arm restraints and safety cams — different priorities for alignment work

On a four-post, the arms discussion is different than on a two-post. The vehicle sits on its own tires on the runways, so there are no swing arms under the frame to restrain. What matters instead is the runway-to-column engagement — how solidly the runways are locked to the columns at working height. On a quality four-post, mechanical safety locks engage at close intervals and the runways sit on the locks, not on the hydraulic cylinder.

For alignment work specifically, the safety cam engagement matters because you want the vehicle rock-steady during measurement. Any flex or drift between the initial reading and the final reading throws off the alignment. Cheap lifts can have a fraction of an inch of settle when weight loads onto the cam, which shows up in alignment work as caster drift between reads. The first alignments and how the workflow settled in

His first alignment on the new lift took him about two hours. First alignment was slow because he was still working out the workflow: drive-on positioning, turn plate release, slip plate release, initial read, adjustment, final read, drive-off.

By the tenth alignment he was at 45 minutes end to end. By month three he was running three to five alignments a day when he chose to book them, on top of his mobile mechanical work. The economics worked out fast. Alignment margins are strong compared to mobile mechanical labor because the customer is coming to him, the equipment is amortized, and the job is repeatable. What broke, what wore, and what we did about it

Ten months in he called with a specific complaint. He was seeing a small caster reading variance between initial and final reads on the same vehicle — about a tenth of a degree of drift. That is enough to matter on a performance-alignment vehicle and enough to make him distrust the equipment. We came out and re-checked runway level with a laser. The slab had a very slight seasonal settle that had pushed one corner of one column down about a sixteenth of an inch. Not dramatic, but enough to show up in the alignment.

The fix was a re-shim of that column. About an hour on-site plus a re-verification. The lift itself had not failed and no parts were needed. This is the kind of maintenance that a professionally-installed alignment-capable home car lift for garage build needs periodically — an annual or biennial re-level check, especially in the first two years while the slab is still settling. Not everyone will tell you that. We do because it is the honest truth about running an alignment-capable lift in a real-world building with real-world concrete.
