Total floor footprint when parked in the corner is about 4 feet by 8 feet, which fits behind a workbench. Deployed footprint is about 10 feet by 20 feet including drive-on ramps.
For differential fluid service, Configuration A is a straightforward setup. The truck drives up the ramps, you raise the lift to chest height (roughly 55 inches of clearance under the runways), and both drive shafts are accessible. The center runway on a four-post partially blocks the transmission tunnel, which does not matter for diff work but would matter for exhaust or driveshaft-related jobs. Fluid capture is easy because you can position a wide-mouth pan directly under the diff and it does not have to weave around lift arms. Total setup time from rolling the lift into position to truck-in-air is about 5 minutes. The tradeoff: lift height maxes around 70 inches, which is fine for diff work but tight for someone taller than 6 feet on longer jobs.
Configuration B: Fixed Two-Post Home Car Lift for Garage Bay
Configuration B is a fixed two-post home car lift for garage service, anchored in the slab in a permanent location. Typical spec: Rotary SPOA10 or Challenger 10K asymmetric, 10,000-pound rated, ALI Gold. Total floor footprint is about 10 feet by 8 feet, but there is no ramp so nothing extends into the drive lane when the lift is not in use. Deployed the arms swing out to about 14 feet wide when a truck is loaded. The lift is not mobile; once anchored, it stays put for its 20-plus year life.
For differential fluid service on a two-post, the workflow is different. The truck drives in and stops centered between the columns, then the arms swing out and pad the frame or pinch welds. Lift goes to about 6 feet, and you have full underbody access because there are no runways in the way. Both drive shafts, the transmission tunnel, the exhaust, and the fuel tank are all reachable simultaneously. That is the big advantage of Configuration B for a pro shop: any job the truck is up for can be worked on the same visit. If the diff service turns into a diff-plus-transfer-case-plus-transmission-mount job (which happens on high-mileage trucks), the two-post handles all of it without repositioning.
Access and Setup Time Compared
Setup time on a mobile four-post home car lift for garage bay is about 5 minutes: roll the lift into the bay, drop the wheel kit, chock, and drive the truck up. Setup time on a fixed two-post is about 3 minutes: drive the truck in, swing the arms, set the pads. Difference is small in isolation. Comfortable at chest height, but you cannot easily walk from one side of the truck to the other without ducking under the runway. On the two-post, you walk around the truck freely. For a shop where the tech does a lot of running back and forth to a tool cart, that walkaround saves time. Fluid Capture and Cleanup
Differential fluid capture matters because the drain plug on a rear axle drops about a quart of gear oil in a stream, and it will splash off the wrong pan shape. On a four-post home car lift for garage layout, the pan sits on the ground between the runways. A rectangular 4-gallon drain pan captures 100 percent of the fluid without splash if you use the right pan geometry. Standard round pans are less forgiving. Buy the rectangular pan; it costs $30 and saves you a shop floor cleanup.
On a two-post, the pan sits on a rolling drain cart with a wide splash lip. Because the truck is higher (about 6 feet vs about 4.5 feet on a four-post), the gear oil has more distance to fall and picks up more velocity, so a smaller pan lip catches less. A pro-grade drain cart is the right tool here; a plastic drain pan on the floor is not. Drain cart runs a few hundred dollars and doubles for used-oil transport back to your recycling drum. Both configurations handle capture cleanly with the right tools. Neither handles it well with the wrong tools. Buy the right pan or cart for your lift configuration on day one.
Site Survey Differences
Site survey for Configuration A (mobile four-post) is quick because there is no anchoring. We check slab thickness to make sure a 4,500-pound loaded lift plus vehicle won’t crack a 3-inch slab, and we check ceiling for lift height. That is essentially the whole survey. Because the lift is mobile, we do not have to worry about locating it precisely; it can roll anywhere in the shop.
Site survey for Configuration B (fixed two-post) is more involved. We chalk out the exact column positions, verify the anchor field is clear of underground utilities, check slab thickness by drilling test holes at both column locations, verify the 220V receptacle is within reach of the driver-side column, and confirm ceiling and door track clearance for the crossbar. That survey takes about 45 minutes on site.
