An RV and trailer service shop owner from Cedar Falls installed his first home car lift for garage exhaust and driveline work about a year ago. The Cedar Falls install
His building is a forty-by-sixty steel shop behind his house — twelve-foot ceilings, six-inch slab, and a bay dedicated to the personal side of his work. Because his commercial shop handles RVs and trailers all day, the home lift is where he does his own pickup, his wife’s SUV, and the occasional friend-vehicle he does not want to route through the commercial books.
Install day ran about seven hours. We core-sampled the slab in the anchor locations, verified six inches with rebar, laid out the columns, drilled the anchors, and set the arms. Month one: exhaust work under a used pickup

On the lift, he finished it in about four hours including two beer breaks.
What he told us specifically: standing under the vehicle with a full range of motion changed how he saw the job. He caught two additional issues — a cracked hanger and a loose heat shield — that he would have missed working blind on his back. The lift paid for itself in exhaust access alone.
Month three: driveline service on a friend’s trailer
Around month three he pulled a driveline out of a car-hauler trailer his neighbor had bought used. U-joint replacement and carrier bearing service. That is the exact kind of job that is miserable on jack stands because you are working with a heavy shaft at head height under a raised vehicle.
The lift held the vehicle rock-steady while he unbolted the driveshaft from the differential yoke and pinion flange. Working height was set at about fifty inches from the floor, chosen using the mid-stroke cam locks — clicked in every two-and-change inches through the lift travel. That intermediate positioning is what makes driveline work bearable at home.
Month six: what wore, what did not
At six months, he called us for an annual-style inspection early because he wanted to see the wear pattern with fresh eyes. What we found: cables looked new, safety cams engaged crisply on every rung, arm restraints held tight, and hydraulic hoses were dry with no seepage. No wear visible.
The one thing that had shifted was cylinder rise time — about two seconds slower than day one. That is normal fluid conditioning and not a wear issue. We topped off the reservoir with the correct fluid, cycled the lift a few times, and rise time normalized. No parts replaced. Month twelve: first annual inspection
At twelve months we ran the full annual inspection formally. Cable strand-by-strand visual, sheave rotation check, safety-cam full stroke test, arm-restraint engagement test on each arm, hydraulic pressure test, and anchor torque check. Everything passed. Cables were spec, cams engaged on every rung, arms held, pressure was in range, anchors were tight.
He signed the inspection log and we scheduled the next annual for the following spring. First-year inspection is included on installs we do — after that, it runs a few hundred dollars annually including travel to Cedar Falls. Worth it for the paper trail alone if you ever want to sell the lift or file an insurance claim.
Owner takeaway after year one
His summary at the twelve-month mark: he would do it again. He would spec the same configuration, same brand, same asymmetric arm choice. The one thing he would change is he would have added a rolling jack platform at time of order — he ended up ordering it separately in month eight when he was doing rear coil-spring work on his wife’s SUV.
