Farm shops are the most overlooked market for a home car lift for garage installation. Symmetric vs asymmetric arms: the checklist item most farmers miss
Symmetric arms mean the columns point straight across from each other and the arms are the same length front and back. Asymmetric arms mean the columns are rotated maybe thirty degrees inward, and the front arms are shorter than the rear. Symmetric is better for trucks and heavy vehicles because the load sits directly between the columns. Asymmetric is better for cars because you can open the door once the vehicle is in the air. Most farm shops have a mix, and that is where the confusion starts.
For our southern Minnesota customer we recommended a hybrid asymmetric with symmetric-capable arms. This design has rotating columns and swap-position arm pins, so you spin the columns and pin the arms to either mode based on what is on the pads. The longest wheelbase drives arm length: he needed longer rear arms with a two-stage or three-stage telescoping design. Ceiling height, truss depth, and light fixtures
Nominal ceiling height on the pole barn was fourteen feet. Actual clear height under the trusses was thirteen feet even, because of a two-foot truss depth. Four-post lifts need eight to nine feet of clear at the top of the runway. Do not measure to the peak of the roof. Measure to the lowest object over the lift location, whether that is a truss, a fluorescent light, a barn heater, or a ceiling fan.
He had a pendant fluorescent hanging almost exactly over the proposed lift bay. We moved the lift bay eight feet north to clear it, which put us closer to the wall than the standard install pattern likes. That is fine, but it changed the arm-swing radius he could use. Concrete condition and slab age
