If you’re a weekend hobbyist mechanic in northwest Iowa about to buy a home car lift for garage restoration and metal work, this checklist is the one we wish every caller ran before they placed an order. Restoration work has different needs than commercial oil-change duty — you’re often working on the same vehicle for weeks, doing frame-off metal work, welding underneath, and expecting the lift to hold a project car dead-still for months. Step One: Measure Everything Twice

Before you look at a single lift model, measure your garage. Bay width at the narrowest point. Bay depth from door to back wall. Finished ceiling height at the lowest point (trusses, garage door tracks, ductwork all count). Concrete thickness — if you don’t know, we can help you find out. Door opening height, measured at the top of the actual clear opening. Distance from where the lift will sit to the nearest electrical outlet for the power unit. Slope of the slab, if any. Location of floor drains and any embedded conduit. Write it all down.

Most of the wrong-lift mistakes we see start with skipped measurements. A guy orders a 12’2″ overhead-connect lift for an 11’8″ ceiling because he eyeballed it. Or the anchor location lands on top of embedded conduit no one remembered. Or the garage door won’t clear the raised carriage on a low-ceiling install. Ten minutes with a tape measure and a level saves a return shipment and a lot of frustration. A home car lift for garage restoration work depends more on fit than on brand — the wrong lift in the right garage is still the wrong lift.

Step Two: Slab Verification Is Non-Negotiable

The single most-skipped step is verifying the concrete under the anchor points. Manufacturer minimum for most 2-posts is 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete. That’s a real number, not a suggestion. Old pole-barn slabs across northwest Iowa are frequently 3″ or thinner, sometimes 2″ over compacted dirt, and putting a column lift on that is how anchor pull-out incidents happen. If you don’t know your slab thickness, we can do a core sample or you can check any existing crack for exposed thickness. If it’s under 4″, we recommend saw-cutting the anchor locations and pouring a proper pad before install.

Concrete age matters too. New concrete needs to cure at least 28 days before anchor installation — some fast-set formulations are shorter, but the standard is a month. Rebar or wire mesh in the pour helps but isn’t strictly required at 4″ of 3,000 PSI. What you can’t skip is the compaction under the slab; a floating slab over settled fill will crack around the anchors even at 5″ thick. Step Three: Match the Lift to the Actual Work

A restoration hobbyist working on frame-off projects has different needs than a maintenance-only owner. For metal work — welding patch panels, cutting rockers, fabricating brackets under the car — you want a 2-post with clear underside access. A 4-post is worse for extended metal work because the runways block your view. But a 4-post is better if you’re welding on the vehicle for months at a stretch and don’t want to move it, because a 2-post left loaded for that long isn’t ideal for the cables and cylinders.

Our compromise recommendation for serious restoration hobbyists is a 4-post storage lift with sliding jack trays. You get the stability of the 4-post for long-duration work, the sliding jacks for wheel-off access, and the caster kit lets you move the lift out of the way when it’s not needed. Step Four: Understand Cable Inspection Intervals

Every 4-post lift and most 2-post lifts use steel cables (or chains, depending on model) as part of the equalization or lifting system. These need inspection — real inspection, not a glance — on a schedule. ALI-recommended intervals are a daily visual check for obvious damage, a monthly close inspection along the full cable length for broken wires or corrosion, and an annual professional inspection or replacement recommendation. Cables typically last ten to fifteen years in home use before needing replacement, but a corroded pole-barn environment can shorten that to seven or eight.

Signs a cable needs replacing include broken wires (more than three in a lay length), visible corrosion or pitting, kinks, flat spots, or diameter reduction along any section. Step Five: Pick Anchors, Adapters, and Accessories Deliberately

The lift is only part of what you’re buying. Anchor bolts, arm pad adapters, drip trays, jack trays, and caster kits all matter for a working home car lift for garage restoration setup. Anchors are model-specific — every lift ships with the correct anchor kit but if you’re doing a thicker pour or an unusual slab, we can spec longer anchors. For a 4-post restoration lift, add sliding jack trays (at least one pair) so you can lift the axles clear of the runways for suspension and brake work. Add a caster kit if you’ll move the lift between garage stalls. Add drip trays if you’re doing oily work and want to protect the concrete. Skip aluminum ramps for street cars unless clearance is genuinely tight — the standard steel ramps are fine for anything above 4 inches of ground clearance. Step Six: Confirm the Install Path

Before the truck rolls, know the install path. That means the route from where the truck will unload to where the lift will stand. Column lifts are heavy — 400 to 600 lb per column — and awkward to move. Overhead beam or crossbar sections need clearance through the garage door. In northwest Iowa we’ve done installs where the customer’s driveway grade or garage door width forced us to rig a boom or bring a mini-loader; if we know in advance, we plan accordingly. If we don’t, install day gets improvised and it takes longer.

Tell us the driveway grade, the garage door width and height, whether there are any steps or thresholds, and whether we can back the truck to within thirty feet of the install location. If the answer is no, we can bring a lift-gate truck or arrange a mini-forklift rental. Step Seven: Read the Warranty Fine Print

BendPak warranties are strong across the line. Atlas warranty terms are shorter and processed through the parent importer. What matters is the claim workflow: who do you call, who ships the part, and who pays the labor.
