A collector in southern Minnesota called us last spring shopping for a home car lift for garage use, and his ask was the one we hear most often. He wanted a place to store a numbered-plate weekend car through the long Minnesota winter, and he wanted to be able to pull a CV axle or drop an exhaust without laying on his back the other half of the year. The first phone call: measuring for a home car lift for garage

The first thing we ask on any home car lift for garage call is ceiling height. Not price, not brand, ceiling. This collector had a 15-foot clear ceiling in a pole-barn addition he had built specifically to stack two cars. That solved the biggest constraint most Minnesota shoppers hit, which is a 10-foot residential ceiling that will not clear a mid-size SUV on a 4-post with the wheels off the ground. Once the ceiling clears 12 feet you have real options, and once it clears 14 feet you can run a full-rise 4-post with a mid-size crossover on top and still walk under a Civic-height car on the floor.

Then we asked about concrete. He had poured a 5-inch slab with rebar during the pole-barn build. That is overkill for a 4-post that only needs 4 inches unreinforced, but it was exactly right if he ever wanted to swap to a 2-post later. We measured his bay at 12 feet wide and 24 feet deep. Plenty of room to work either side and still walk to the workbench. On any residential lift project the tape measure comes out before the credit card, and we ended up recommending an 8,000-pound 4-post with a rolling jack tray for the CV axle work he had in mind.

Why a 4-post beat a 2-post for a storage-first build

He asked about a 2-post because his brother-in-law had one and swore by it. On paper a 2-post is faster to get a car in the air and easier for the kind of underbody access he wanted. On the collector’s specific use case, though, a 4-post won on three counts. First, storage. A 2-post is not a storage device. The car sits pinched between four pads, and even the best asymmetric arms are not designed to hold that load for six winter months. A 4-post cradles the tires and rests the load on the deck runways, which is exactly what a stored car wants.

Second, the cars he owns are on the light side of what a 2-post asks for. A 2-post lift will lift them, but the pad placement on some unibody classics is genuinely tricky, and one wrong pad on a rocker panel is an expensive weekend. Third, resale. If he ever sells the pole barn and the lift stays, a 4-post with drive-on ramps and a rolling jack is far easier for the next owner to use than a 2-post that demands vehicle-specific lift-point knowledge. All three of those pushed us toward a 4-post home car lift for garage duty, and he agreed within about an hour.

Symmetric vs asymmetric arms explained

Even though he chose a 4-post, we spent a call walking through symmetric versus asymmetric arms because his rolling jack has swing arms and the language matters. Symmetric arms are the same length front and back, which centers the car over the columns and gives you full door swing behind the posts. Asymmetric arms are shorter in front and longer in back, which shifts the car back toward the columns so the doors open in front of them instead of pinching. Asymmetric is what most modern 2-posts look like on a shop floor.

For a rolling jack on a 4-post the choice is smaller than people think, because the jack picks up the axle or subframe, not the pinch weld. He ended up with symmetric jack arms with wide swing, which gave him CV-axle clearance on the sedan-length cars he owns and still had enough reach for the crossover his wife drove in occasionally. The takeaway most collectors miss is that arm geometry is a per-car decision, and if you are running a home car lift for garage that will service more than one car, plan for the widest wheelbase you own plus the longest overhang and buy accordingly.

Install day: forklift, five-inch slab, cable routing

Install day for a residential 4-post looks nothing like the driveway a plumber pulls up in. We show up with a Rotary-trained crew, a forklift, and a small trailer of hardware. On this build the forklift was mandatory because the 4-post crates weigh in around 2,300 pounds and the columns are 10 feet long. His pole barn had a 12-foot roll-up door so we drove the forklift right in, tipped the crate, and set the columns dry-fit before anchoring anything to the 5-inch slab.

Cable routing is the part homeowners never think about. A 4-post has four equalizer cables that run through the columns and across the top crossbeam, and the tension has to be dialed evenly or the deck sits crooked. On this install we ran the cables, tightened evenly in quarter-turn increments, cycled the lift ten times to seat everything, then retensioned. Then we shot the deck level with a laser, adjusted the safety locks so all four clicked at the same tooth, and rolled a car on and off three times before we called it done. Total install time on-site was about six hours with two techs. Every home car lift for garage we set takes that same rhythm.

First service season: pulling a CV axle from underneath

Six months after install he called to walk us through his first real service job, a CV axle on the daily driver he had rolled in for a rainy Saturday. On a 4-post with a rolling jack, the axle came out easier than either of us expected. He raised the lift to shoulder height, ran the rolling jack under the front subframe, lifted the wheel just clear of the deck, and had the axle out in about 40 minutes including caliper hang-off and tie-rod separation.

What surprised him was noise and posture. On a jack-stand job in his old garage he was on his back for most of it with a droplight balanced on his chest. Winter storage cycle and what surprised him

The winter storage cycle was the reason he bought the lift, so we called him in February to see how the parked-up-top season was going. Two surprises. First, the safety locks click every two to two and a half inches of travel and he had gotten used to setting the deck at the second-from-top lock instead of full-up. That gave him about 10 inches of extra clearance under the stored car, which he used to walk a floor scrubber and a shop vac through without ducking. That is a small thing, but on a home car lift for garage that will spend months at storage height, the ability to pick your lock position matters.

Second surprise was tire flat-spot. He had left the stored car on the deck for four months without moving it, and the tires took a couple of miles to round out again in the spring. Not a lift problem, but if we had asked the right question up front we would have suggested rolling the car forward six inches every month. He now writes the date on the deck in dry-erase marker so he remembers. Little things like that are the reason we keep talking to customers after the sale, and why we cycle back to see what we could have coached better before install.

Twelve months in: what we would tell the next collector

A full year past install, three things he would tell the next collector shopping for a home car lift for garage build. First, pay for the rolling jack. It is the difference between a lift that stores a car and a lift you will actually work under. He uses his four or five times a season and it changed what jobs he does at home versus takes to a shop. Second, do the math on the extra-tall column option if you have the ceiling. He did not add tall columns and now regrets it slightly, because a lifted truck he bought a few months later barely clears at full rise. Ordering right the first time is cheaper than upgrading.

Third, get the site survey. He did a phone site survey with us plus a driveway visit before we shipped, and it saved him from ordering a footprint that would have blocked his air compressor.
