When an RV and trailer service shop in the Quad Cities called about adding a home car lift for garage work on their private vehicles, we knew the slab and clearance conversation would be interesting. This is the first-year ownership story of that install — how we picked the model, what the slab test showed, and how the first big CV axle and half-shaft replacement went once the lift was in service.

Why a Home Car Lift for Garage Made Sense Next to a Commercial Shop

Even shops that already own commercial lifts sometimes need a home car lift for garage use next door. The reason is billing hygiene. Personal-vehicle work happening on a commercial lift creates a paperwork mess — insurance boundaries, tool time, and shop-rate distortion. A separate home lift in the house garage keeps personal projects on personal time and equipment. For the Quad Cities RV shop that called us, the owner wanted to keep his side collection of pickups and older cars maintained without pulling technician time on the commercial floor. A home lift solved the problem. It also let his kids learn to turn wrenches on the family vehicles without commercial-shop hazards nearby. The garage next door had 11 feet of clear ceiling and a slab poured about a decade earlier when the house was built. Standard residential 4-inch. That’s the setup where we brought in the coring tools and confirmed what we actually had before quoting anything final.

The Concrete Slab Test: 4 Inches or 5

The first real check on any home car lift for garage install is the slab. Manufacturers write 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete as the minimum for most 2-post lifts, and 3.5 inches for lighter 4-post storage models. The Quad Cities slab measured a real 4 inches with a rebound hammer reading in the 4,000 PSI range — solid, above spec on strength, and just at the minimum on thickness. We drilled a small test hole away from the planned anchor zone and confirmed the reading. That’s the difference between guessing and knowing. The margin was thin enough that we picked a 4-post storage lift (lower per-column load) rather than pushing a 2-post at 10,000 pounds. A 2-post would have needed epoxy anchors or a slab pour extension to be safe. The customer took the recommendation. Better a slightly less versatile lift on a known-good slab than a heavier lift on a slab that stresses over time. Same lesson applies to any residential garage in the region.

Rebar Reality: What the Core Sample Showed

Rebar is optional on most home car lift for garage installs, but it matters when the slab is at the minimum thickness. The Quad Cities slab had rebar on 24-inch centers, which we could confirm because the house builder still had the pour ticket. That’s better than nothing and better than the 6×6 wire mesh some builders use, but not the 12-inch-on-center pattern we’d write into a new pour. What the core sample showed was that the concrete under the top surface was fully consolidated — no voids, no cold pour lines, no delamination between the finish and the base. That was the actual green light. Even at 4 inches, well-consolidated concrete with mid-density rebar holds anchor forces well. Poorly consolidated concrete at 5 inches can crack out an anchor. Thickness is a proxy; consolidation is the real number. If your slab is old and the mix history is unknown, ask for a core test before committing. It costs less than the lift.

Install Day: Anchoring and Torque Verification

Install day for the Quad Cities home car lift for garage took about ten hours from tailgate to first raise. We set the 4-post lift, dropped the anchor pattern with a template, drilled with a rotary hammer, blew the holes clean, drove the anchors, and torqued to the manufacturer’s spec — 100 foot-pounds on most home lift wedge anchors. We verify torque on every anchor twice: once at initial setting and again after the first load. On a 4-post the first-load verification happens after driving a test vehicle up the ramps and cycling the lift five times through the safety locks. Any anchor that lost torque gets called out and reset. All eight anchors held on this install, which is the expected result on a good slab. We fill the hydraulic reservoir, cycle air out of the system, verify the safety lock ladder engages on every ratchet stop, and sign off. The owner drove his personal pickup up the runways that afternoon.

First Real Job: CV Axle and Half-Shaft Replacement

The first big service job on the lift was a CV axle and half-shaft replacement on an older Subaru wagon. On a 4-post lift with rolling jacks, that job runs about as fast as it would on a commercial 2-post — maybe five minutes longer for the extra jack step. Wheel off, axle nut out, tie-rod loose, sway bar link off, ball joint separated, half-shaft popped from the transmission. Twenty minutes for the tear-down on each side. New shafts in, torque back to spec, wheels back on. The owner texted us a photo mid-job. The lift held steady through the whole procedure, the jack tray held tools within reach, and the safety locks let him rest the vehicle at working height without holding load on the hydraulic. That’s what a home car lift for garage is supposed to do — make one-person jobs safe and quick. No shortcuts, no compromise on procedure, just the right tool for the work.

Month Six Check-In and What Wore First

Six months in, we did the courtesy check-in that comes with every install. Anchor torque held; we retorqued anyway. Cables looked new — light home use, maybe 30 cycles total. Hydraulic fluid was still clean, no leaks. What wore first: the paint on the ramps where the tires drove up. Cosmetic only, nothing structural. We touched it up with a rattle can of matching color the customer had ordered. That’s typical for the first six months of a home car lift for garage — cosmetics show wear before mechanicals do. The safety lock cams were still perfectly clean. The jack tray had a couple scuffs from a slipped socket. Everything within expectation. Full one-year inspection is scheduled for around the anniversary of install. That’s when we’ll pull the columns’ bottom covers and inspect the base welds, which is a standard annual step on any 4-post.

What We’d Do Differently on the Next Install

Two things we’d change on the next install of this exact configuration. First, we’d recommend the customer pour an extra 8×8-foot pad of 5-inch concrete in the anchor zone before install if the timeline allowed. That’s a small pour, a couple hundred dollars of concrete, and it turns a marginal 4-inch slab into a comfortable 5-inch anchor zone. Second, we’d order the caster kit up front. The customer thought he wouldn’t need to move the lift, and six months in wanted to shift it two feet to line up better with a rolling toolbox. Casters retrofit later, but ordering with the lift is cheaper and cleaner. Otherwise, the install held up, the lift is quiet, and CV axle work is going smoothly.
