A two-post lift clamps the car under the frame or pinch welds and holds it there, which is fine for a few hours of service work but is not the right tool to leave a car locked for four months. Suspension components are not designed to hang unloaded for long durations. For storage, four-post. For service, two-post. That is the rule. Arm Restraints — What They Actually Do
On a two-post lift, the arms swing under the vehicle to reach the lift points. Arm restraints are the mechanism that locks the arms in position once you have them where you want them. They matter because an unlocked arm can rotate under load if the vehicle shifts, and a rotating arm can drop a vehicle. Most modern ALI Gold two-post lifts have automatic gear-and-pawl arm restraints that engage as the lift rises. On a four-post storage lift, arm restraints are not applicable in the same way — the runways cradle the wheels, no arms are used. But if the buyer ever adds a bridge jack (for wheels-free service on a four-post), the bridge jack has its own pad-lockout system that serves the same role. Safety Cam Engagement and What Failure Looks Like
Every four-post lift has mechanical safety locks — cams or ladders — that engage the column and hold the runway at a set height, independent of the hydraulics. That is the feature that makes storage safe. The hydraulic cylinder does the lifting; the mechanical locks do the holding. When you “drop the lift onto locks,” you are transferring the load from the hydraulic pressure onto the mechanical safety. What failure looks like: on a properly maintained lift, it does not — the locks are simple, robust, and engage on every cycle. On a lift that has been neglected, the cam pivot can seize or the lock pawl can wear. The Marion Homeowner’s Ceiling Question
Ten-foot ceilings sound tight for a four-post but are usually enough. His car (a Miata) is short — under four feet tall. The runway sitting fully up at seven feet means the car sits at maybe eleven feet total, which is over ceiling. But he did not need the lift fully up; he needed it up enough to park his truck under it. Six feet of clearance under the runway was plenty, which put the car’s roof at maybe nine feet six inches — well within his ten-foot ceiling. Storage lifts are almost always used at partial height, so the advertised max height of the lift is largely irrelevant for storage buyers. Ceiling height matters more for someone lifting a tall SUV to work standing under it.
The Lift We Picked and the Runner-Up
