The Actual Numbers That Matter

Their bay measured roughly 12 feet wide by 22 feet deep with a 10.5 foot ceiling — a fairly typical older garage footprint in this part of West Des Moines, built before three-car garages with 12+ foot ceilings became standard. That 10.5 foot number immediately ruled out most overhead 2-post lifts, which generally want 12 feet minimum to rise a sedan or crossover to comfortable CV axle working height without the roofline brushing the overhead beam.

A baseplate configuration, by contrast, typically needs only 10 to 10.5 feet of clearance because there’s no top beam to clear — the synchronization runs through the base at floor level instead. For this family’s garage, that 1.5 foot difference was the entire decision. We measured twice, confirmed the ceiling at its lowest point near an HVAC duct, and specced a baseplate unit that gave them working height with margin to spare. Why CV Axle Work Wants an Open Overhead Envelope

Arms need to reach the factory-designated lift points without interference from lower control arms, sway bar links, or exhaust routing that sits closer to the vehicle’s centerline on FWD platforms. We speced arms with enough reach and enough clearance to swing under a sedan or minivan without the family needing to reposition the vehicle mid-job.

Column spread on a baseplate configuration tends to run a touch wider than an equivalent overhead unit, since there’s no top beam bracing the columns together — the base itself provides that rigidity instead. In a 12 foot wide bay, that wider spread still fit comfortably, but it’s exactly the kind of detail that gets missed when someone buys a lift online without a layout. We walked their bay with a tape measure before any lift left our warehouse.

Concrete and Anchoring in an Older Garage

This garage’s slab was original to the 1970s build, poured at what we measured to be about 4.5 inches, without visible rebar reinforcement but in solid condition with no major cracking. That’s adequate for a properly rated 2-post lift, but it’s on the lower end of what we like to see, especially with three generations of daily use ahead of it. We ran anchor pull tests before finalizing the install to confirm holding strength, which we recommend on any slab older than 20 years regardless of configuration.

Both overhead and baseplate designs anchor similarly into the slab, so concrete condition wasn’t actually part of the overhead-versus-baseplate decision here — it was a separate check we ran regardless of which lift they picked.
