Start with your garage, not the lift

When someone in Waukee calls about a home car lift for garage installation, our first question isn’t what brand you like. It’s how deep your garage runs from the roll-up door to the back wall, what your side-to-side width is, and how tall the ceiling measures. Those three numbers set the entire menu of options. A three-stall garage with an eleven-foot ceiling can run almost anything short of a full-rise commercial two-post. A single-bay attached garage with an eight-foot door — that’s a different conversation, and we’ll usually recommend a mid-rise or a four-post with a lower overall stack height. We measure to the lowest point over the lift footprint, meaning the garage door tracks and any header trim, not just the drywall ceiling. Homeowners forget that the lift arm swings need floor space too. Before you fall in love with a specific model, sketch your garage on graph paper with car, workbench, and lift positions. Two-post or four-post: what actually matters at home

Both work for a home car lift for garage build; they solve different problems. A four-post is a drive-on: the runways carry the wheels, so it’s naturally storage-friendly and forgiving. Park one car up top, keep another underneath, or work on brakes and exhaust with the wheels loaded. Nine-thousand-pound four-post lifts start at reasonable pricing and don’t need bolt-in anchors, so if your slab is only four inches thick you still have options. A two-post lifts by the frame with swing arms, so the wheels hang free — that’s what you want for suspension, brake rotors, wheel bearings, or a deep engine drop. Two-post lifts require thicker concrete: most manufacturers spec four and a quarter to six inches of good pour with rebar or fiber. If you plan on 60/40 suspension work versus storage, we’ll usually steer you to a two-post. Storage first, occasional wrenching, four-post. Many customers in our service area end up owning one of each over five or ten years, but a first lift is almost always about the split between wanting to store cars and wanting to actually work under them. Oil pan gasket work and the jobs a home lift enables

Every home lift we quote starts with someone naming a specific job they’re tired of doing on ramps or jack stands. Oil pan gasket work is a top-three answer. Doing it flat on the floor means fighting torque angles, catching rusty pan bolts by feel, and hoping the sealant surface is clean when you can’t actually see it. On a lift at chest height, that same job is genuinely enjoyable — you see the whole pan flange, drop the crossmember or steering rack out of the way, clean the mating surface with a razor blade under a work light, and lay the new gasket down without any drama. The same is true for transmission service, differential fluid, exhaust hanger replacement, and clutch jobs. Even if you don’t do heavy work, having the vehicle at eye level for winter undercoating passes changes what you’re willing to tackle. We had a homeowner tell us the third weekend after his lift install he did more maintenance in one afternoon than he’d done in two years on the ground. That’s the return on a home lift — hours saved and back health, not just dollars.

Home car lift for garage bay layout: where the lift goes

The bay-layout question is really about clearances. On a four-post you need enough length for the vehicle plus the ramps extended, plus about four feet of walk-around at each end so you can climb up or run a work light in. Side-to-side, the columns eat about eight inches per side beyond the runway width. On a two-post, the columns sit outside the vehicle and you need swing-arm clearance — most home two-posts want a twelve-foot-wide bay if you’ll be lifting a full-size pickup with arms extended. Do not put the lift in the middle of a two-car bay if you also want to park a daily driver next to it: the second car has to be able to open its door past the column. We recommend dedicating one full bay to the lift and using the other bays for storage or parking. When we lay out a bay for a customer, we chalk the column positions on the slab, put the vehicle in place, and open every door — that’s the only way to confirm the layout works before we drill the first anchor hole.

Ceiling height, slab, and door clearance

Three measurements make or break a home car lift for garage install: ceiling height, slab thickness, and door opening. Ceiling height is measured to the lowest object over the lift, which for most attached garages is either the garage door track cross-piece or a mid-span ceiling truss. Eleven feet clear is the comfortable minimum for most four-post storage lifts on a full-size SUV; twelve feet plus is where you stop worrying. Slab thickness is next: we ask every homeowner to core-drill a small test hole in the corner, or use a rotary hammer to punch through and measure. Four inches of good pour handles most four-posts. Two-posts want four and a quarter and preferably rebar. Door opening matters if you plan to raise the vehicle above the door and close the door — many people don’t realize the roof of the vehicle passes the top of the door track well before the wheels clear the ground. Brand and capacity: what we recommend for home

For a home car lift for garage use, we sell two tiers. The commercial-grade tier is Rotary and Challenger — heavier steel, thicker locks, longer warranties, made for shops that lift eight cars a day. The home-and-hobbyist tier is BendPak and Atlas, which are still solidly built but priced to make a home lift attainable. For most homeowners doing weekend maintenance and storage, the home tier is the honest recommendation. If you have a lifted diesel or a classic with a heavy iron block that pushes seven thousand pounds, we spec up to nine or ten thousand pounds of capacity to give you margin. Do not buy a six-thousand-pound lift for a five-thousand-pound truck. Lift capacity matters less than lift design for many home users: a nine-thousand-pound four-post with tall columns and wide runways beats a ten-thousand-pound short model for storing modern crew-cab pickups.
