Home car lift for garage budget: the top branch of the decision tree
The budget branch of the decision tree needs to be honest before anything else. Bottom-tier off-brand lifts are cheap for a reason — we’ve covered why in other posts. Home-tier proper lifts from BendPak and Atlas start around the mid-thousands for a good four-post and mid-high thousands for a good two-post. Commercial-grade Rotary and Challenger tiers step up from there, and are what most professional buyers put in a home garage. Installation runs from a few hundred for a straightforward four-post with easy delivery, up to over a thousand for a two-post with anchor work in a tight bay. Don’t forget the ancillaries: hydraulic fluid, jack pads or a rolling jack, a set of tall stands. Realistically, budget for the lift plus installation plus about ten percent for extras. If your total budget doesn’t cover a proper lift with proper install, wait until it does. Branch two: two-post or four-post for alignment work
For alignment work specifically, the two-post-versus-four-post branch of the home car lift for garage decision matters a lot. Alignment requires the wheels loaded on flat, level surfaces with slip plates or turn plates at the front so caster and toe adjustments can settle correctly. That’s a four-post scenario, or specifically a four-post alignment-rated model with drive-on ramps, slip plates cut into the front runways, and rear turntables. A two-post lifts by the frame with wheels hanging — great for suspension access, useless for a proper alignment. So if alignment is a real workflow for you, you want a four-post alignment lift. If alignment is only an occasional need, some racers use a bolt-on alignment kit that installs into a standard four-post — it’s a compromise but it works for track-day setup. We spec bolt-on alignment kits regularly for home builds where a full alignment lift is either overkill or over budget. Branch three: overhead versus baseplate — the racer’s answer
Overhead versus baseplate applies mainly to two-post decisions, but there’s a related decision on four-post lifts too. On the two-post side, for a home car lift for garage user who wants to drive tall trucks through — a race team hauling on a tall trailer, or a mechanic with high-roof vans — baseplate is often the right call. On the four-post side, the equivalent decision is whether to run rolling jacks bridged between the runways. Rolling jacks let you lift the wheels off the runways for suspension work — turning a four-post into a hybrid that does everything except a full frame lift. For a racing team, we usually spec a four-post with two rolling jacks so alignment work and suspension work both happen on the same lift. That’s the one-lift-does-everything configuration. It costs more up front and takes more bay space, but it removes the need for a second lift. When budget allows, this is the setup we build for serious wrenchers. Branch four: column height and the top-of-vehicle problem
Column height is often overlooked and it’s a critical branch of the home car lift for garage decision tree. Standard column height on many home four-post lifts is around seventy-two to seventy-eight inches. That’s fine for cars and low SUVs. For a lifted pickup with an aftermarket bed rack or an SUV with a roof cargo box, you’ll hit the crossbeam of the lift long before the wheels are worth standing under. Racing teams often haul cars and drive daily-driver trucks; a home lift needs to accommodate whatever fits under it. We recommend the tallest column option a home garage ceiling supports, up to about eighty-four inches, because used ceiling clearance always wins over unused ceiling. If your ceiling is twelve feet, the difference between a seventy-eight-inch column and an eighty-four-inch column is entirely on the runway-clearance side and comes free in usable underhood height. Don’t leave that on the table. Ask specifically about the column height option on any home car lift for garage quote — most models offer a taller-column upgrade for a few hundred dollars extra.
Branch five: capacity versus weight distribution on race cars
Capacity is a rated number — nine thousand, ten thousand, twelve thousand pounds — but real-world capacity on race cars is more nuanced. Race cars are usually light: a stripped Miata is under two thousand pounds. But a race team’s tow rig might be a three-quarter-ton diesel truck at eight thousand pounds. Your home car lift for garage build has to accommodate both. Nine thousand pounds handles the tow rig with margin. Twelve thousand is overkill for anything an Ankeny racing team is going to touch. Where capacity matters more is weight distribution: race cars often have unusual balance — mid-engine layouts, dry sumps, big fuel cells in the back. A two-post has to be balanced fore-aft on the arms; asymmetric two-posts adjust for that. On a four-post, weight distribution mostly doesn’t matter as long as total weight is within capacity. If you’re mostly working on a spec race car in the seven-hundred-to-two-thousand-pound range, capacity is nowhere near your concern. If you’re mixing race cars and daily trucks, size the lift for the heaviest realistic vehicle plus twenty percent margin.
What alignment work actually demands from a home lift
Alignment work on a home car lift for garage setup demands specific features that not all lifts have. Front slip plates need to slide smoothly under thousands of pounds of vehicle weight — cheap slip plates seize under load and give false readings. Rear turntables, or a rear plate that a portable turntable sits in, need to be at exactly the same height as the front slip plates so the vehicle doesn’t twist on its axis during a settle. The runway surface must be dead flat — a warped or crooked runway generates false toe and camber numbers. Alignment lifts are engineered to hold flatness under load. Standard four-posts are not, and repurposing a standard four-post for alignment with a bolt-on kit is a compromise. If alignment is core to your work, buy the correct alignment-rated lift. If it’s occasional, the bolt-on route saves money and works for casual setups. For a racing team where every degree of caster matters, we don’t recommend compromising here.
