When you shop a home car lift for garage duty that’s storage-first, the spec sheet reads differently than when you shop for a wrenching-first lift. Column height, runway length, and ramp geometry become the primary specs. You’re not looking for the highest lock, the fanciest arm design, or the biggest cylinder — you’re looking for the tallest usable stack, the longest runway that fits your longest vehicle, and the smallest ramp footprint that lets you drive on comfortably. Capacity matters less if your heaviest vehicle is a Chevelle at four thousand pounds. Where storage-first spec-shopping diverges from wrenching-first is in things like alignment slip plates (not needed) and bolt-on alignment kits (occasionally needed) versus casters for mobility (very much needed if you might move the lift to reconfigure your bay). A collector’s build often uses casters so the lift becomes a movable storage rack. That’s a specific spec you have to ask for by name — not all four-posts come with a caster kit and not all bay layouts allow one. The spec conversation is different from the wrenching version.
Model-number decode: what those letters and digits mean
Every manufacturer uses a model-number scheme that packs a lot of information for a home car lift for garage buyer. A typical decoded model has capacity, column height, runway width, and feature designations. Example format: a nine-thousand-pound four-post with tall columns and extra-long runways might read something like 9K-TL-XLR — nine-thousand-pound capacity, tall-column, extra-long-runway. Different brands use different letter codes but the concept is universal. When you’re comparing models across brands, the model number is where you should start, not the marketing name. Ask the dealer to decode the model number for every lift on your shortlist. If the dealer can’t decode it — walk. Common suffixes to watch for: X or XL for extended (usually runway length), T or TL for tall columns, W or WD for wide runways, S for storage-optimized, and ALI or ALI-G for certified. Not all suffixes are consistent across manufacturers, so ask specifically. Two lifts that look identical in a marketing photo can be dramatically different once the model number is decoded. This is where a good dealer earns his keep — translating spec sheets into English.
Comparing three shortlist models side by side
Our southeast Iowa collector’s shortlist ended up being three specific models across two manufacturers. Model A: a nine-thousand-pound four-post with standard columns and standard runways, entry pricing. Model B: same nine-thousand-pound rating with tall columns and extended runways, upgraded pricing. Model C: a ten-thousand-pound four-post with tall columns, extra-long runways, and factory caster kit ready to install, top pricing. Side by side, the spec differences that mattered for his home car lift for garage build were column height (six inches taller between A and C), runway length (fifteen inches longer on B and C), and capacity margin (one thousand pounds more on C). Ramp design was similar across all three. Warranty terms were similar. Where C won was the runway length — long enough to store his crew-cab pickup up top and still have his ’67 Firebird underneath. Runway length for a mixed vehicle collection
Runway length is one of the most overlooked specs on a home car lift for garage build, especially for a collector with a mixed fleet. Standard runways are usually sized around 170 to 180 inches. Extended runways run 190 to 210 inches. For a modern full-size pickup at 240-plus inches bumper to bumper, that runway needs to be long enough for the tires plus a safe overhang margin. Some collectors over-fit vehicles and let the front bumper hang past the runway end — technically fine if the wheels are on, but it looks precarious and it’s not what the engineer intended. A longer runway also lets you store two vehicles nose-to-tail if your ceiling is tall enough and the lift is rated for it — rare, but it happens in serious storage builds. Longer runways cost a few hundred more, weigh more, and take slightly more bay depth. If your longest current vehicle plus one foot of margin fits under standard, no upgrade needed. If it’s close, upgrade. Once the lift is installed, runway length is not something you can add later.
Alignment capability without a dedicated alignment lift
Even a storage-first home car lift for garage build can handle occasional alignment work with the right accessory. A bolt-on alignment kit — slip plates that install into the front of the runways, plus removable rear turntables — turns a standard four-post into a pinch-hit alignment lift for the times you need it. For our collector doing a Camaro suspension setup, that kit was perfect: fifteen minutes to install for the alignment job, remove when done. It’s not the same as a factory alignment-lift with permanent cutouts, but for a project car that gets aligned once a year, the compromise is honest. Cost is a few hundred to under a thousand depending on kit quality. What you don’t get is repeatable precision over hundreds of alignments — the bolt-on kit shifts slightly with reinstallation. For a collector aligning three cars a year across a lifetime, that’s fine. For a race team doing pre-race setups every weekend, it’s not. Match the tool to the use. On a home lift for a collector, the bolt-on alignment kit is usually the right answer.
Install day and the six-month check-in
Install day for our southeast Iowa collector was uneventful — the barn slab was clean, ceiling was fifteen feet, delivery came through a wide barn door with no issue. Twelve months in, our southeast Iowa collector would build the next bay slightly differently. His main takeaway: he’d have specced two lifts, not one, so he could stack four vehicles in a bay pair instead of two.
