Layout B: 10K 2-post (fastest single-vehicle rotation)
If your fleet is all half-ton or lighter and you want the fastest possible tire rotation, a 10K 2-post wins on time per vehicle. The 2-post already puts wheels free with no rolling jack setup — the vehicle goes up, all four tires are already in the air. In a 12-foot ceiling southern Minnesota shop, we spec an overhead 2-post. In an 11-foot ceiling, we spec a baseplate. Between those, we look at door track drop and finished ceiling height with a laser before the owner commits. What you give up: under-lift storage. What you gain: about ten minutes of workflow per vehicle. Across six vehicles quarterly, that’s an hour saved per rotation, and across a year it’s five hours you can spend on something else in the shop.
Southern Minnesota space and ceiling numbers
Most 30-by-40 pole buildings in the Albert Lea and Rochester area have 12-foot side walls with a peaked ceiling that opens up in the middle. That helps overhead 2-post fit — but only in the peak. If you plan to lift near the wall, use the side-wall number. We laser the actual lift centerline both dimensions and mark the crossbar height in painter’s tape. Overhead door tracks eat 12 to 14 inches of ceiling when open, a real problem if you’re already tight.
