Second, level runways to within a manufacturer tolerance — usually 1/8 inch across the whole length. Third, a target system or a set of caster/camber gauges you actually know how to use. If your lift isn’t a 4-post alignment-ready model, you’re not doing real alignments, you’re checking toe. Both are useful. They aren’t the same job, and pretending they are is where most bad home alignment setups start.
Layout A: alignment-ready 4-post 12K
The full commercial answer at home is a 12,000 lb alignment 4-post with turntables and slip plates built in. This is a real lift — the same one the pro’s own shop probably runs, just installed at his house instead. It’s bigger, taller, and heavier than a normal home car lift for garage. In a 30-by-40 Waukee pole barn with a 12-foot ceiling, it fits — but it uses the whole bay. No under-storage during winter. Layout B: 9K 4-post with clip-on turntables

It will let you check and adjust toe on most vehicles, and it will let you use a set of camber gauges if you know what you’re doing. Site survey: what we actually measure
A real site survey for a home car lift for garage alignment install takes about 90 minutes on-site. We laser the ceiling at the lift centerline, verify door track drop, laser the floor for level across both runway paths, check the slab thickness with a rebound hammer or a core sample, and mark the lift footprint in painter’s tape. On a 5-inch reinforced pour in a newer Waukee build, most of the survey is confirmation. On an older detached-garage pad, we sometimes find 3.5-inch pours with visible cracks and have to say no. That’s a hard conversation but it’s the right one, and the customer always appreciates hearing it before they’ve written a check they can’t get back.
Concrete and slab prep for alignment lifts
Alignment 4-post lifts want the same 4 inches, 3,000 psi minimum as any 4-post, but they benefit from a flatter slab. If the floor slopes to a drain, we shim the columns and check runway level before signing off. On a fresh pour, we ask for at least 28 days cure time before install. On an existing pour, we test-sample if there’s any doubt. Slab prep for a home car lift for garage alignment install is stricter than for a maintenance-only lift because your alignment numbers are only as accurate as your level. A quarter-inch of runway slope you can’t see with the eye is a real caster reading error at the end of the day.
Electrical and air prep for a Waukee bay
