A home car lift for garage project sounds simple until you actually measure the space, and last winter we installed one in Ankeny for an overlanding builder who ran into every clearance problem we usually warn people about. He had a three-stall garage, an 11-foot ceiling on paper, and an overhead sectional door that arced right into the crossbar path of a 4-post. He wanted to store a built Bronco upstairs and service wheel bearings under it without spending Saturdays on jack stands. This is the case study we walk every new Des Moines metro customer through when they ask about a home car lift for garage: what we measured, what we chose, and what we would do differently next time.

What the Ankeny Garage Actually Measured
The house was a newer build with a factory-poured slab. On paper the garage advertised an 11-foot ceiling; our laser measured 10 feet 9 inches to the drywall. That is a very common story in the Des Moines metro. Builders round up, homeowners repeat the round number, and the actual usable clearance is two or three inches short. For an overlander with 33-inch tires and a 78-inch tall body, those inches decide whether you can stand under a rocker or duck the whole time.
We also had to account for the sectional garage door. When those doors open they do not disappear flat into the ceiling — they arc back on the tracks and hang below the joists by four to eight inches. We measured 6.5 inches of door drop fully open. Stacked with the ceiling drywall that gave us just under 10 feet 3 inches of true usable overhead space. That single measurement, taken with a laser and not a tape thrown over a bumper, changed what we recommended.
Ceiling Height and Door Swing Are One Problem, Not Two
Everyone asks about ceiling first and door second, and both matter, but the interaction between them decides configuration. A 4-post rated 8,000 to 9,000 pounds stands roughly 85 inches tall with the crossbar and safety locks in place. Park a lifted truck with 30-inch tires and a 78-inch body on it and you are pushing 13 feet of stack overall. Most Des Moines metro home garages, even new builds, are 10 to 12 feet at the joists. Full rise is not going to happen on this rig, and it does not need to.
The practical answer for this owner was a 4-post used at a partial rise. He did not need max height to service wheel bearings, and the locks click roughly every two to two-and-a-half inches so he could pick a working height that cleared the door path and still let him stand up under the axle. That is the same conversation we have with almost every home car lift for garage customer: rarely do you need max rise. You need enough rise to walk under the vehicle, and you need the crossbar to not fight the open door.
Choosing 2-Post vs 4-Post for an Overlanding Rig
Overlanders bring a specific set of problems. The trucks are heavy — a built Bronco or Tacoma with bumpers, drawer systems, roof-top tent, and jerry-can mounts crosses 6,500 pounds regularly. They ride on 33 or 35-inch tires so ground clearance is fine, but body height is real. And the owner usually wants to store the rig on the lift when it is not being used, because Iowa winters mean salt.
That last point steered us to a 4-post. A 2-post is faster for wheel-off service because the arms swing right to the pinch welds, but you cannot park an SUV on a 2-post and walk away. A 4-post holds the vehicle on its own tires, the drive-on runways carry the load, and you can leave a rig up there for weeks without worrying about hydraulic seals weeping down. For pure service ergonomics, 2-post wins. For a home car lift for garage that has to double as storage, 4-post is the answer almost every time.
Wheel Bearing Service on a Rig That Is Already 8 Inches Off the Ground
Wheel bearing work on an overlander sitting on a 4-post is not the most convenient job in the world — you do not get suspension droop the way a 2-post gives you — but with rolling jacks on the runways it becomes very workable. We supplied a pair of rolling bridge jacks with this install, and the owner uses them to lift the front axle independently once the truck is up on the runways. He gets wheel-off access without ever climbing under the vehicle on jack stands on a concrete floor.
Sealed hub bearings on a modern truck are usually a straightforward job with the wheel off. Pull the caliper, rotor, hub bolts, and swap the unit. The real advantage of doing it up in the air is time and back health. What used to be a Saturday marathon on the floor is now a 90-minute job standing up. He replaced both fronts and both rears in year one and told us he would have paid a shop twice for the same work if the lift had not been there. That math is why an overlanding builder buys a home car lift for garage in the first place.
Concrete Slab Thickness and Anchor Requirements
Slab thickness is the single most common home car lift for garage question, and the one where owners try hardest to talk themselves out of checking. Manufacturer specs on a 4-post rated 8,000 or 9,000 pounds usually call for a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete. Older Iowa homes sometimes have 3.5-inch slabs; some barn conversions have less. This Ankeny slab measured four inches on the outer edge and probably a hair thicker inside — enough for a lift in the 8-9K class with a light overlander on it.
For a 2-post the concrete rules are stricter — 4.25 inches at 3,000 PSI is common, and some heavier 2-posts want six. That is another reason 4-post wins the home garage argument on borderline slabs. If we cannot verify thickness on paper, we drill a small test hole with a rotary hammer and measure with a caliper. It is a 15-minute check that saves you from anchoring into thin concrete that cracks under a loaded lift six months later. We do that check on every install where the slab age or spec is unknown.
What We Would Change on the Next Overlander Build
Two things. First, on the next build like this one we would spec the rolling jacks up front, not as an add-on after the fact. The owner bought his three months later and we came back out to fit them. Doing that during the original install would have saved a trip fee and cut his wheel-bearing job time in half from day one. Rolling jacks on a 4-post are the difference between a storage lift and a service tool.
Second, we would recommend a bolt-on drip tray across the crossbar. Iowa winters mean the truck comes in wet and salty, and even a well-sealed vehicle drips onto the slab under the crossbar. A simple aluminum drip pan catches most of it and keeps the floor from staining. It is a modest add-on that pays for itself the first spring. Both of these lessons now carry over to every overlander-focused build we do in the Des Moines metro, and they show up in the questions we ask before we quote.
