The Ankeny site survey that changed both configurations

The first thing we asked to see was his slab. He had poured a fresh six-inch pad with rebar the summer before, which put him in a much better position than most Ankeny homeowners we survey. Second, the jack pads land on the frame in the same spots every time, which speeds up cycle time on repeat customers. Turntables and slip plates make the runway usable for actual alignment work — without them you are just parking the vehicle on a raised platform. Together the package raised the total install a modest amount over a bare 4-post, but the incremental cost was small enough relative to the lift itself that we did not talk him out of it, and he has been glad every day since that he did not settle for less.

Configuration B: 2-post with wide-frame arms and a shop-floor jack

The alternate we drafted was a 10,000-pound symmetric 2-post with wide-frame telescoping arms and a separate shop-floor jack for wheel work. A 2-post has genuine advantages: full access to the underside of the vehicle, no runway ramps in the way, and a lower total install cost. For a home car lift for garage owner doing mostly wrench work — suspension teardowns, exhaust, transmission drops — the 2-post is almost always the right answer. The trade-off is that alignment work is possible but awkward, because you have to bolt on aftermarket turntable brackets and the machine calibration has to account for the arm sag under load.

It came in noticeably lower than the 4-post-plus-alignment build, and if his business had been evenly split between alignments and general repair we would have pushed him toward it. But his book was already heavier on alignments than on other work, and the 2-post would have cost him time on every alignment ticket while saving him time on the rare transmission drop. When we ran the annualized math with him at his desk, the 4-post won on payback inside the first year. He appreciated that we did not pretend the 2-post was the wrong answer for everyone — it is the right answer for many home car lift for garage owners, just not for his specific book of work.

Slab, ceiling, and door-opening measurements we take on every visit

For alignment-first shops, yes. The runways stay flat, the turntables sit at a known height, and the whole workflow — drive on, lock, level, read — happens with a fraction of the setup time a 2-post demands. Rolling jacks give you back most of the flexibility a 2-post would have offered, at least for wheel-off work.

The customers we push toward a 2-post instead are the ones whose alignment volume is genuinely occasional — maybe one alignment for every ten oil changes or exhaust jobs. For that book, the 2-post’s underside access wins on daily productivity even if alignments take longer. For an alignment-heavy independent shop, the 4-post-plus-jacks package usually pays for itself in cycle time inside the first six months, and the resale value of a good 4-post with the alignment package is meaningfully higher if the shop ever sells the equipment later. That resale factor rarely comes up in the initial call but it is worth knowing about, because home car lift for garage buyers who upgrade shops within five years often recover a real fraction of what they paid.

What the pro shop owner picked and how the install day actually went

He chose the 4-post configuration with rolling jacks, turntables, and slip plates. We ordered the lift in from our regular warehouse partner, coordinated freight to line up with the day he could take delivery, and sent our two-man install crew out on a Monday. The install itself ran a full day because we spent extra time squaring the runways to the alignment machine bay he had already laid out on the slab. That is not a step you rush on an alignment-capable install. The runways need to be parallel to within a small tolerance the manufacturer specifies, and any twist introduces error into every alignment he will ever do on that lift.

The rolling jacks got installed the same day and calibrated to lock at multiple intermediate heights. We ran a startup vehicle — his own daily driver — through a full lift cycle to verify the safety locks engaged on both runways evenly. He signed off, we walked him through the maintenance schedule and the anchor re-torque interval, and we left him with a folder of documentation including anchor part numbers in case he ever needs to move the lift. Two weeks later he called to tell us he had run twenty alignments through the lift with zero calibration drift, and he specifically thanked us for the extra time we took squaring the runways on install day. That was the payoff for the survey.

Site-survey checklist you can run before we ever show up
