He has run lifts in a professional shop for years, he can quote arm reach and cylinder stroke off the top of his head, and he is looking for the frame that will let him do at home what he is used to doing at work. The specs that actually matter (and the specs that do not)

The service manager we started with had a spec sheet in his hands and a highlighter. His first observation was that most manufacturer literature emphasizes capacity — how many pounds the lift will hold — as if that were the number that decides fit. Capacity matters, but it is rarely the limiter on a home car lift for garage build. The frames we sell in the home tier all handle passenger cars and light trucks with margin. The specs that actually decide fit are geometric: full-lift height, drive-through width, arm reach, and the various height clearances that determine whether your specific bay works with the lift you are considering.

The specs that do not matter for most home users include maximum descent speed, dry column weight, and the shipping-crate dimensions. Those numbers appear prominently on every listing because they are easy to test in a factory, but they are irrelevant to how the lift performs once it is in your bay. Cycle time — how long it takes to raise and lower a vehicle — matters for a commercial shop turning cars, but for a home user doing one job every weekend it is noise. We ask a service manager to focus on the geometric specs and the safety-lock design, because those are the numbers that will affect his experience every time he uses the lift over its life.

Full-lift height and clearance under the raised vehicle

Full-lift height is the number a service manager cares about most. It determines whether he can stand comfortably under the vehicle at full extension without stooping. Common 2-post full-lift heights on home tier frames range from a shorter floor-plate model in the 70-inch class to overhead-beam models that push into the 74 to 78-inch range depending on manufacturer. Anything below 72 inches will feel low to a working tech. Anything above 78 inches becomes ceiling-limited in most home garages regardless of the ceiling type.

Four-post full-lift heights are quoted at the runway top, which is not the same as the underside clearance a service manager actually needs. Once you subtract the runway thickness and the crossmember height, useful underside clearance on a 4-post is usually five to six feet at full lift depending on the model. That is enough for most standing work but not always enough for an unusually tall service manager or for a specific job like a transmission drop on a tall truck. We measure this at the site survey and we spec the frame against your height, not the average buyer’s. If you want to do a real technical deep-dive on your lift options, this is the number to spend the most time on with us.

Drive-through width and column spacing

Drive-through width on a 2-post — the clear space between the columns — determines whether wide vehicles fit. Common home-tier 2-posts run drive-through widths in the mid-90s to low 100s of inches. A full-size crew-cab pickup will fit through those on center, but a work van or dually may struggle. Some frames offer a wider column-spacing option at a modest cost premium. A dealership service manager who anticipates working on a personal work van or a dually should spec the wider option up front rather than regretting it later.

Column spacing also affects how the lift interacts with the bay walls. Two-posts need clearance for the arm swing on both sides, and the swing pattern depends on whether the arms are symmetric or asymmetric. A symmetric 2-post with three-stage arms needs about a foot of side clearance per side beyond the drive-through width to allow arm rotation. Asymmetric 2-posts need slightly more on one side and slightly less on the other. If your bay is fifteen feet wide, most home car lift for garage 2-posts fit comfortably; below fourteen feet you start running into arm-swing clearance issues. Wider bays are always better, and we measure and diagram the arm swing on every site survey to make sure the frame actually fits the room.

Arm reach, pad heights, and stack-pad options on 2-posts

Arm reach determines the range of vehicles a 2-post can lift. Short arms cannot reach the pinch weld of a long-wheelbase pickup with the truck centered between the columns. Long arms extend farther but sag more under load. Home-tier 2-posts usually use three-stage telescoping arms with a range that comfortably covers passenger cars through half-ton trucks. For a service manager who anticipates a diesel three-quarter-ton or a long-wheelbase van, we quote a frame with a longer maximum arm reach and a slightly higher capacity rating together.

Pad heights and stack-pad options are what a service manager notices on daily use. Newer vehicles with reinforced pinch welds sit high enough that the standard pad barely reaches. Manufacturers offer stack pads in various thicknesses to close that gap. A good lift comes with a set of stack pads in the box; a great lift lets you buy taller pads or frame cradles as accessories. Frame cradles are especially important for EVs, exotic cars, and anything with a full skid plate. When a service manager tells us his personal vehicle stable and we see anything unusual — an EV, a low-clearance sports car, a lifted truck — we quote the pad accessories in the initial number so nothing surprises him at install day or afterward.

Runway length, capacity ratings, and rolling jack integration on 4-posts

A 4-post’s specs read differently than a 2-post’s. The critical numbers are runway length, capacity, drive-through height, and rolling jack compatibility. Runway length has to accommodate the longest vehicle you plan to lift plus the wheelbase margin the manufacturer recommends. Common home-tier 4-post runways range in the mid-170-inch to 200-inch length. A full-size long-bed pickup runs close to 250 inches in overall length, but the wheelbase is the number that actually matters, and most home lifts handle that with margin.

Capacity ratings on home 4-posts are typically 7,000 to 9,000 pounds. That covers most passenger cars and light trucks. Heavier trucks push into the 10,000-pound tier. Rolling jack integration matters because the jack has to fit between the runways and lock at multiple heights. Not every home car lift for garage 4-post accepts rolling jacks by default — the runway width has to be within the jack’s supported range. We check that spec on every 4-post quote where the buyer mentions any wheel-off work. If the rolling jack is not compatible with the runway, the frame is a poor fit for a service manager who wants full functionality at home.

Electrical and hydraulic power unit specs

The power unit is the specification most buyers gloss over and most installers spend the most time on. Home-tier lifts almost universally use 220-volt single-phase power. The motor amp draw at startup is high — often 20 to 30 amps peak — before settling into a lower running draw. That startup draw sets your circuit requirements. A 30-amp dedicated circuit is a common recommendation, though the specific number depends on the lift and the panel. Existing garage wiring is often undersized for a lift because the original electrician was thinking about garage door openers and outlets, not motor loads under startup.

Hydraulic reservoirs on home lifts hold a few gallons of ISO-32 hydraulic oil, and the reservoir sits either on top of the power unit column or in a separate can nearby. Reservoir capacity affects duty cycle: a small reservoir heats up faster during continuous operation. For a home user doing one or two cycles per session, this is a non-issue. For a service manager who might use the lift for a full-day project on a Saturday, we recommend a slightly larger reservoir. Every home car lift for garage we spec includes a power unit and reservoir sized to the intended use, and we check the electrical panel amperage on the site survey to confirm the circuit is right for the load.

He specifically avoided a 4-post because his personal stable was two passenger cars and a mid-size SUV — no long-bed trucks and no plans to store a vehicle underneath. The 2-post gave him full underside access for the mixed general-maintenance work he wanted to do at home: oil changes, brake work, exhaust access, and the occasional bigger job like a timing chain service on his SUV.

He specifically talked us out of trying to sell him accessories he did not need. He knew he did not want turntables because he had no interest in doing alignments at home. He knew he did not want a mid-rise lift as a second frame because he had one bay and one lift budget. His picks were disciplined and matched to his actual use case, and the install ran without surprises.
