If you are the crew chief of a small racing team out of Marion and you are finally putting a home car lift for garage use in the shop, the decision tree starts with money and ends with a forklift. Between those two points sit five or six choices that determine whether you love the lift for 15 years or resent it in year two. This article lays out the whole tree, from what you can spend, to what config fits, to how the crate gets unloaded off the semi.

Step 1: The Budget Bracket You Are In

Budget sets your bracket. Under $3,000 gets you an entry-level Atlas 4-post storage lift, no bells, cable-and-cylinder standard, hand-release safety locks. Between $3,000 and $5,500 buys you a mid-tier 4-post like a BendPak HD-9 with air-actuated locks and better fit and finish, or an entry 2-post like an Atlas commercial-line. Between $5,500 and $8,500 puts you on a proper commercial-grade 2-post like a Rotary SPO10 or Challenger E10 with full asymmetric geometry and shop-quality construction. Racing crews we work with rarely go under $5,500 because they know what commercial-grade means. You are cycling the lift far more often than a weekend maintenance guy, and the weight of a race trailer’s contents is not always what the spec sheet says. If your budget is tight, buy a used commercial-grade lift before you buy a new entry-level one. We stock certified used Rotary and Challenger units in Ames when they come off active service, and they run for another decade easy.

Step 2: 2-Post vs 4-Post Decision

Once you know your budget, config comes next. For brake service and rotor swaps at the pace a race team does them, a 2-post is the default. Wheels come off in seconds with no ramps in the way, the caliper is at chest height, and you are back on the ground in under 20 minutes if the pads slid clean. A 4-post with a rolling jack works, but it is slower. If your racing team’s home car lift for garage doubles as trailer storage or race-car storage between events, you flip to the 4-post because that is what stores.

The middle ground is a mid-rise scissor. We do not recommend it for a first lift because it lacks the wheel-hang benefit of a 2-post and the storage utility of a 4-post. If it is your second lift after you already have a proper 2-post, then a scissor makes sense for tire mounting and low-lift work. For everyone else building their first lift, the answer is 2-post or 4-post, and that decision follows the workflow: fast wheels-off service equals 2-post; storage plus occasional service equals 4-post.

Step 3: Capacity and Rise Height

Capacity is easy: pick a lift rated at least 25 percent above your heaviest expected vehicle. A race team hauling a 3,800 lb race car in the trailer wants 10,000 lb minimum on a 2-post because you are also lifting the tow rig. Rise height is where people undershoot. A 2-post that maxes at 72 inches of pad rise puts the average car’s rocker at about chest height on a 5-foot-10 person. That is fine. What is not fine is a 65-inch rise lift, which forces you to duck under the rockers to work the caliper.

For any home car lift for garage build where you plan to work under the car for real, buy the taller-column option. The upcharge is small and you regret going shorter every time. On a 4-post, rise height translates to how much car you can park underneath. A BendPak HD-9 gives you about 82 inches of usable clear height under the runways at full lift, which fits most sedans below and leaves a hair of clearance for the roof on the upper deck.

Step 4: Slab and Ceiling Reality Check

Now you check whether your garage supports what you just picked. Slab spec for a 10,000 lb 2-post is 4.75 inches at 3,000 PSI. Slab spec for a 9,000 lb 4-post is 4 inches at 3,000 PSI. Ceiling for a full-rise 2-post is 11 foot 6, for a 4-post around 10 to 11 feet depending on model. If your garage does not meet the 2-post spec, you have two options: pour a slab overlay (expensive, disruptive) or drop back to a 4-post. Nine times out of ten, the 4-post is the right compromise.

Any home car lift for garage build where you skip this step ends badly. We have watched customers ignore slab spec, install a 2-post anyway, and have the columns start tilting inside a year. The manufacturer denies the claim, we get the call, and the fix is more expensive than doing it right the first time. Do the slab test before you order. A test core costs under $50 of drill time.

Step 5: Freight Options and Cost

Freight is the surprise on most lift orders. Standard LTL delivery to a residential address means the semi rolls up, drops the crate at the end of your driveway on a pallet, and drives away. That is fine if you own a forklift. If you do not, you pay for lift-gate service, which lowers the crate to ground level, but you still have to move a 2,200 lb crate into your garage. On a residential order, we usually recommend paying for our white-glove delivery when we can route to you, because we bring the forklift and drop the crate inside your building.

Freight cost varies with distance and destination. For a home car lift for garage delivery within Iowa and immediate surrounding states, we can often batch your order with a truck route we already have running and cut the freight cost meaningfully. Racing teams near Marion frequently fall inside that route. Outside our route, LTL runs a few hundred to over a thousand depending on lift weight and destination class.

Step 6: Unloading and Forklift Logistics

Once the freight is on your driveway, you need to get it inside. A 4-post crate is 20 feet long and 2,200 to 2,400 lb. A 2-post ships shorter but heavier per column, with two crates around 800 to 1,000 lb each plus a power unit and hardware pallet. You need a forklift rated at least 4,000 lb capacity to handle either safely. A skid steer with 2,000 lb forks is not enough. A tractor loader with pallet forks rated for the weight can work if the operator knows the machine.

For racing teams that already have shop equipment, this is usually solved. For homeowner installs, we recommend renting a proper forklift for the day, and Marion has several rental yards that stock rough-terrain lifts. Confirm what you have before we ship. A stranded crate on a driveway at 5 p.m. with the semi already gone is not a fun call. Every home car lift for garage delivery we schedule includes an unloading plan we sign off on together.

Step 7: Install Day and What Comes Next

Once the crate is in your bay, install is either a DIY weekend or a professional call. Racing crew chiefs are usually comfortable doing the install themselves — they have the tools, the labor, and the pride. We ship every lift with detailed instructions and remain on the phone at 800-674-9302 while you work. If you want us to do it, we schedule a two-tech crew for 4 to 6 hours depending on config. Either way, you cycle the lift three times empty before you put a car on it, and you inspect every cable, hose, and anchor.

After install, the maintenance rhythm is monthly fluid check, quarterly cable inspection, annual anchor torque. That is it.
