Most home car lift for garage guides gloss over the numbers. This one does not. If you are a dealership service manager in northern Missouri thinking about installing a proper lift in your personal shop — not just for oil changes on the family fleet but because you actually know what a good bay looks like — you want real dimensions, real anchor patterns, and real clearances. Column Footprint and Anchor Pattern
A Rotary SPO10 2-post has a column base plate of 16 by 20 inches with a 4-bolt wedge anchor pattern. Anchor holes sit at roughly 10 by 14 inches, drilled with a 3/4-inch bit to a 5.5-inch embedment. Columns spool up 141 inches tall and sit 132 inches apart center-to-center in the standard-width configuration. Overall assembled footprint is 132 inches column-to-column plus 20 inches per column base, meaning you need at least 172 inches (14 foot 4) of clear inside dimension across the bay to install and swing arms freely.
A Challenger E10 runs similar with a 15 by 18 base plate and 4-bolt pattern at 9 by 12. Column spacing is 130 inches center-to-center. A BendPak HD-9 4-post has base plates roughly 10 by 24 inches at each of four columns, with 4-bolt patterns at 6 by 20 inches. Overall footprint is 190 inches long by 105 inches wide, meaning you need a bay 200 by 115 minimum. Vehicle Clearance and Working Height
Working height is where most home bays undershoot. A Rotary SPO10 at full rise puts the arm pads at 74 inches above the floor. Add a 6-inch vehicle rocker to sit on the pad, and the underside of the vehicle is at 80 inches. Working height above that vehicle is another 24 inches minimum for safe access, meaning the underside of your ceiling must be at least 104 inches or 8 foot 8 for the shortest possible 2-post config. Full commercial-height column config needs 138 inches or 11 foot 6.
A BendPak HD-9 4-post at full rise puts the runway top at 72 inches with about 63 inches of clear space beneath. That is enough for a sedan to park underneath, with maybe 6 to 8 inches of ceiling clearance for the vehicle on top. Any home car lift for garage buyer should measure to the lowest point in the ceiling, not the peak. Rafters, HVAC ducts, garage-door tracks, and lighting all count as ceiling for this measurement.
Slab Spec and Concrete Reality
Slab spec for a 10,000 lb 2-post is 4.75 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, measured at the anchor location. Slab spec for a 9,000 lb 4-post is 4 inches at 3,000 PSI. Rebar helps but is not usually required if PSI and thickness are met. Fiber mesh does not count as reinforcement for lift anchor purposes. Northern Missouri residential slabs poured in the last 20 years usually meet 4-inch spec but rarely exceed it; older slabs from the 1970s and 1980s can be anywhere from 3.5 to 5 inches with no rebar.
The way you verify slab spec is a test core, which is a 1-inch diameter drilled sample that gives you thickness and lets you eyeball aggregate quality. It takes 10 minutes and it removes the biggest source of install-day surprises. Do not skip it because the slab looks fine on top; the top and bottom of a slab can differ by an inch.
Bay Layout for Dealership-Service Workflow
A dealership service manager knows what a good bay looks like. Tool cart to the driver-side rear, air line drop from the ceiling at the front-passenger corner, work bench along one wall with a 220V circuit for a battery charger, floor drain if the local code allows. For a home car lift for garage build, the same principles apply but scaled down. Minimum working bay for a 2-post is 24 by 30 feet. Minimum for a 4-post with a rolling jack is 26 by 30 feet.
Beyond the lift itself, allow 6 feet clear in front of the lift for tool carts and vehicles entering, 6 feet clear behind for parts staging, and 4 feet clear on each side for walking room. If your garage is 24 wide by 24 deep, you can fit a 4-post but you are tight on parts staging. If it is 24 by 30, you are comfortable. Electrical Load and Circuit Sizing
A commercial-grade 2-post pulls about 20 amp inrush and 4 to 6 amp continuous while lifting on 240V single-phase. A 4-post is similar. NEC and manufacturer spec both call for a dedicated 30-amp breaker on 10 AWG copper for the lift circuit. That is oversized on the continuous draw but sized for start-up inrush and future headroom. Do not share the circuit with any other load. Compressor gets its own 20 or 30-amp circuit; heater gets its own; battery charger gets a 15-amp on the wall.
Total electrical load for a properly outfitted home bay — lift, compressor, lighting, heater, wall receptacles — usually lands between 80 and 120 amp. A 100-amp subpanel fed from the main house is often adequate; a 200-amp subpanel is comfortable. If you are stretching a 60-amp subpanel to cover a home car lift for garage plus a compressor plus space heat, you will trip breakers on cold mornings. Size the subpanel to the whole shop, not just to the lift.
Air and Fluid Line Routing
Every commercial 2-post has air-actuated safety locks that need a 1/4-inch air line from your compressor to the power unit column. Run that line overhead, drop it down the column, and terminate at the power unit’s air fitting. A 20-gallon single-stage compressor is plenty for lock actuation plus an impact wrench; a 60-gallon two-stage covers bigger tools like a sander or a die grinder. Fluid lines are self-contained on both 2-post and 4-post. Hydraulic hoses ship with the lift, cut to length, and connect the power unit to the cylinder(s). AW-32 anti-wear hydraulic oil is the specified fluid; the reservoir holds about 3 gallons on a 2-post and 4 to 5 gallons on a 4-post. Never substitute ATF, motor oil, or brake fluid. Putting It All Together
For a northern Missouri dealership service manager building a proper home bay: shoot for 26 by 30 minimum bay dimensions, verify 4.75 inches of 3,000 PSI slab or drop to a 4-post, spec an 11-foot-plus ceiling, install a dedicated 240V 30-amp circuit within 6 feet of the driver-side column, run a 1/4-inch air line from a 20-gallon compressor, and specify AW-32 hydraulic oil. Do that and you have a bay that will work for the next 15 years without fighting you.
