A small-fleet operator in Cedar Falls called us this spring about a home car lift for garage duty to handle exhaust and driveline work on his fleet of six service vehicles. He’d narrowed his shortlist to two models but wasn’t sure which one fit his shop layout. This article is the side-by-side comparison we walked him through: a Rotary SPO10 10K 2-post against a Rotary 9K 4-post, with the specific spec sheet numbers, freight cost differences, install trade-offs, and the recommendation we made based on his exact fleet profile. The fleet the lift has to serve
Understanding the fleet is the first step in any home car lift for garage model selection. Our Cedar Falls customer’s fleet was six vehicles: two half-ton pickups, two 3/4-ton pickups with utility beds, one Transit-class cargo van, and a service Escape used for parts runs. Heaviest vehicle: the 3/4-ton pickup with a full utility body at approximately 8,500 lb loaded, 7,800 lb empty. Longest vehicle: the Transit van at 236 inches. Tallest vehicle: the Transit van at 84 inches.
The lift capacity requirement is set by the heaviest vehicle plus a safety margin. For an 8,500-lb heaviest vehicle, a 10K-rated lift gives adequate margin. A 9K-rated lift is marginal. The runway length requirement on a 4-post is set by the longest vehicle plus wheel-position clearance; for a 236-inch Transit van, we need runway usable length of at least 200 inches, which pushes into extended-runway 4-post territory. The ceiling requirement is set by the tallest vehicle plus lift travel; for an 84-inch Transit at maximum extension, we need ceiling clearance of about 13 feet. All three of these numbers push toward specific lift models, not just categories.
Model comparison: Rotary SPO10 versus a 4-post
The two shortlisted models: the Rotary SPO10 10K 2-post, symmetric configuration, standard columns, and a Rotary 9K 4-post extended-runway with mechanical locks and a 6K rolling scissor jack. Both are ALI Gold Label. Both ship from Rotary’s US warehouse. Both install in a standard three-car detached garage with a properly cured 4-inch slab.
Capacity: SPO10 at 10,000 lb, 4-post at 9,000 lb. Advantage SPO10 for this fleet by a margin. Underbody access: SPO10 wins for exhaust and driveline because the runways don’t sit under the frame rails. Storage capability: 4-post wins because you can leave a vehicle up between shifts. Extended runway option: 4-post handles the Transit van cleanly; SPO10 doesn’t care about runway length because you lift by the frame. Install cost: SPO10 and 4-post are within $400 of each other delivered-installed. Freight: 4-post crate is heavier, adds about $200 to freight. Cycle time for a quick wheels-off job: SPO10 wins because you don’t have to drive up runways. Cycle time for a driveshaft drop: SPO10 wins on the same logic. Runway length and vehicle length trade-off
The runway length question only affects the 4-post option. Standard 4-post runways are around 172 to 178 inches usable. Extended runways run 200 to 220 inches. A 236-inch Transit van doesn’t need the runway to be as long as the van; the wheels sit at approximately the wheelbase length, so a 200-inch usable runway easily accommodates a 130-inch wheelbase Transit with 30 inches of runway at each end for approach.
The trade-off with extended runways is footprint. A 200-inch runway on a 4-post pushes the total lift footprint to about 20 feet long. In a Cedar Falls three-car garage running roughly 24 feet deep, that leaves 4 feet of walkable space at each end, which is tight for opening the front and rear doors of a stored vehicle. Standard runways at 178 inches drop the total footprint to about 17 feet, which leaves 7 feet at each end. If the fleet includes a Transit van, extended runways are non-negotiable on a 4-post. If it doesn’t, standard runways give you more walking room. This is one of those home car lift for garage decisions that depends entirely on the specific vehicle mix. Weight capacity, arm reach, and lifting speed
Weight capacity we already covered: SPO10 wins 10K to 9K. Arm reach is a 2-post-only spec. The SPO10 arm rated capacity at fully retracted is around 5,000 lb per arm; at maximum extension it drops to roughly 3,750 lb per arm. Four arms multiplied by 3,750 lb still gives 15,000 lb aggregate capacity at maximum extension, which is well above the 8,500-lb heaviest fleet vehicle. Arm reach at maximum extension covers a wheelbase up to about 150 inches, which handles every fleet vehicle including the Transit van.
Lifting speed on the SPO10 is approximately 45 to 55 seconds full travel empty, 55 to 65 seconds under load. On the 4-post it’s approximately 55 to 65 seconds full travel empty. For a shop doing 6 to 10 lift cycles per day across a fleet, that 10-second difference per cycle adds up to about 15 minutes a week, which is trivial. For a home car lift for garage running 3 cycles a week it is completely irrelevant. Lifting speed becomes a real spec comparison only at high daily cycle counts. Do not pay a premium for a faster pump unless you’re running the lift as a commercial workstation.
Add-ons: air kits, drop-in turn plates, rolling jacks
Add-ons matter on any home car lift for garage build and they matter more when the lift is supporting fleet work. For the SPO10, we recommend an on-column air kit: an air line runs up the column to a quick-connect near the top so you can grab an impact wrench without stringing a hose across the floor. Frame cradle adapters for the utility-bed 3/4-ton pickups protect the rocker panels from getting bruised by the standard flat pads.
For the 4-post option, the add-ons are different. Drop-in turn plates ($400 to $600) let you do the occasional alignment. A rolling scissor jack ($1,500 to $2,500) is essential; without one, you can’t do any wheels-off work on a 4-post. Wheel chocks and drive-off stops are included with most 4-post models but confirm on the spec sheet. Air line kits for 4-posts are less common because the fixed runway location makes hose routing easier; a single fixed drop is usually enough. Freight, install, and lead time to Cedar Falls
Freight from Rotary’s US warehouse to our Ames yard runs about 5 to 7 business days. From Ames to Cedar Falls is a same-day delivery on our own truck. Total lead time from order to install day is typically 3 to 4 weeks including the manufacturer’s build time. Install day for the SPO10 in a Cedar Falls garage runs a full day; install day for the 4-post runs a half day.
Freight cost from Rotary to us runs $300 to $500 for a 2-post crate and $500 to $700 for a 4-post crate. Delivery from Ames to Cedar Falls runs a flat $250 including our install-team drive time. Install labor runs about $1,200 for the 2-post and about $700 for the 4-post because the anchoring work is heavier on the 2-post. Total delivered-installed cost difference between the two models comes out to about $600 higher on the 4-post because of the scissor jack accessory, not the base lift. Our recommendation for the fleet
For this Cedar Falls small-fleet operator we recommended the SPO10 2-post. Rationale: the primary work is exhaust and driveline, both of which favor 2-post underbody access; the heaviest vehicle at 8,500 lb needed the 10K capacity margin; the fleet did not include any vehicle that required the storage capability of a 4-post. He ordered the SPO10, we installed it in mid-May, and by his July follow-up he had done six exhaust jobs and two driveline drops on it. He reported that the on-column air kit was the single accessory that paid for itself fastest and that he wished he had a wider low-profile floor jack for slipping under the rear ends of the pickups.
For a different fleet, say one with lighter vehicles and a real need for winter parking, our recommendation would swing to the 4-post.
