Start With Ceiling Height, Not Capacity

Measure from the finished slab to the lowest obstruction — not the peak, not the drywall between joists, but the garage door track, the opener rail, the light fixture, the HVAC trunk line. That number is your ceiling. Then subtract the height of the tallest vehicle you plan to park underneath, plus the runway deck thickness, plus four to six inches of comfortable working clearance.

A typical attached Iowa garage runs somewhere between nine and ten feet of usable height. That’s enough to stack two ordinary sedans or a sedan under a coupe on a lower-profile four-post, and it’s usually not enough to stack a crew-cab pickup under anything. How Much Capacity You Actually Need

Homeowners routinely overbuy capacity and underbuy runway length. An 8,000 lb four-post handles almost every passenger car, half-ton pickup, and midsize SUV in Iowa driveways. Step up to 9,000 or 10,000 lb if you own a three-quarter-ton diesel, a dually, a loaded Suburban, or a classic land yacht with a cast-iron big block. Above that, you’re into commercial territory that a residential slab and single-phase power usually don’t justify.

What matters more is how the weight sits. Check the per-post capacity and the wheelbase range the manufacturer publishes. A short-wheelbase sports car on runways built for a long-bed truck ends up with its front tires hanging near the ramp end, which feels sketchy even when it’s technically within spec. Conversely, a long-bed extended cab on a short runway set can overhang the rear enough that you can’t get the ramps up. We ask what the longest and shortest vehicles you own are, then match runway length to that spread. Also think about the tire width on anything with aftermarket wheels — wide runways cost a little more and solve a problem you can’t fix after delivery. Cable-driven lifts with equalizer sheaves need slack-cable and cylinder safeties working properly regardless of capacity, so don’t let a big number distract you from build quality.

Storage Lift or Service Lift? Be Honest

This is the fork in the road, and it’s where a lot of buyers pick wrong. A storage-focused four-post is about parking one car over another, permanently. Solid or open runways, a caster kit so you can roll it out of the way, maybe a drip tray. You’re not crawling under it much. A service-focused four-post gets used for oil changes, exhaust work, brake jobs, and rust inspection — which means you want open-center runways, a rolling bridge jack option, and enough post spacing to actually swing a wrench.

Concrete: The One Thing You Can’t Fake

Four-post lifts distribute load across four columns, so they’re gentler on concrete than two-posts — but gentle isn’t the same as forgiving. Most manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, reasonably level. Plenty of older Iowa garage slabs are three and a half inches of unknown mix poured over questionable base, and freeze-thaw cycles here are brutal on anything marginal.

Good news: many four-posts are freestanding and don’t require anchoring in a residential setting, which means a slab that’s adequate but not ideal can still work. Bad news: a slab that slopes for drainage will make the lift sit unevenly, and out-of-level posts cause uneven cable wear, columns that bind, and carriages that don’t lock in the same tooth on all four corners. We shim during installation and check level at each post with a laser. If you’re pouring new, tell your concrete contractor you’re installing a lift, ask for six inches with rebar or fiber, and keep the control-joint layout away from where the posts will land. That single conversation saves more headaches than any other part of the project.

Power, Air, and Where the Power Unit Goes

Most residential four-posts run a 110V single-phase motor, which is convenient, but they want a dedicated 20-amp circuit — not an extension cord, not a shared outlet. Brands, Build Quality, and What Breaks

Installation Day and What It Costs You

A four-post install in a clean, empty garage with good access is typically a half-day to a full day for two people. The hard part is rarely the assembly — it’s getting a crated lift into a garage with a 7-foot door, around a corner, without scratching drywall. We ask for photos of the approach before we quote. If the crate has to be broken down in the driveway and carried in piece by piece, that adds time.

Costs break into equipment, freight, and installation. Freight to central Iowa is real money on a shipment this size, and liftgate service matters if you don’t have a forklift or a tractor with forks.
