Minimum Slab Thickness for a Home Lift

Rebar, Mesh, and Reinforcement
Reinforcement isn’t strictly mandatory in every case, but it changes the math on thickness and it adds real insurance against cracking under a loaded lift. Rebar grid or wire mesh embedded in the slab lets many manufacturers approve a slightly thinner pour, and it resists the hairline cracking that unreinforced concrete can develop over years of vibration and thermal cycling in an Iowa garage that swings from summer heat to winter cold. Fiber-reinforced concrete is another option some contractors use, and it can help with surface cracking, but it isn’t a substitute for proper thickness and PSI when it comes to anchor pull-out strength. Checking for Existing Cracks and Damage
Cracked concrete doesn’t automatically disqualify a garage from getting a lift, but it does require a closer look before anchors go in. Small hairline cracks from normal shrinkage are common and usually not a problem if they’re not near the anchor points and the slab otherwise meets thickness and PSI requirements. Larger structural cracks, spalling, or any area where the slab sounds hollow when tapped are red flags that need to be addressed, and sometimes that means a localized patch or a full new pour rather than trying to anchor around the damage.
