Measure the Building Before You Measure the Lift
Every farm shop we’ve quoted has a different ceiling height, and that number decides more than anything else which home garage car lift system will actually work. We had a lead out of Ankeny with an 11 to 12 foot ceiling and 4-plus inch concrete looking at a 2-post for maintenance on cars under 3 tons — that’s a completely different build than a pole building with 12 or 15 foot side walls. If your shop has 12 foot walls, you have room for a full-rise 2-post that lifts a truck high enough to work standing up underneath. If you’re closer to 10 or 11 feet, you need to look at low-overhead columns or a lift with a shorter stack height, or you’ll clip your rooftop light fixtures the first week.
Door height matters just as much as ceiling height, and it’s the one thing farm shop owners forget to check. We’ve had customers tell us the door was the real bottleneck, not the ceiling, because they needed to drive a lifted truck or a combine attachment through it after service. Walk your building with a tape measure before you call us, and bring us the ceiling height, the door height, and the width between any posts or support columns. Concrete Thickness Determines Your Lift Options
A home garage car lift system puts real point-loads on your slab, and farm shops built years ago often have thinner concrete than a shop poured for equipment use. Standard residential concrete runs around 4 inches, and that’s fine for most 2-post and 4-post home lifts rated up to around 9,000 or 10,000 pounds, but it’s worth confirming before you order. If you’re pouring new concrete for a shop addition, we tell farm customers to go with 5 inches and rebar reinforcement if there’s any chance you’ll run heavier equipment across it later — tractors, skid steers, or a bigger lift down the road.
We also ask about anchor bolt clearance and whether there’s a floor drain, in-floor heat, or utility lines running through where the posts will land. On a farm, floor heat is common and it changes where we can anchor. Get us a photo of the slab and any known plumbing or electrical runs before your install date, and we’ll tell you exactly where the lift can go without hitting anything underneath.
Weight Capacity for Real Farm Work
Most farm shop vehicles are pickups, and a 9,000 to 10,000 pound 2-post handles nearly everything you’ll drive in — half-tons, three-quarter tons, even a one-ton dually loaded down. If you occasionally pull in a grain truck or a piece of equipment heavier than that, size up rather than squeezing by, because alignment work specifically loads the lift asymmetrically and undersized arms will flex. We’d rather quote you a slightly larger capacity than have you babying a lift that’s maxed out every time you drive on it.
Alignment-capable 2-post lifts also need the right arm configuration — flush mount or clearance arms if you’re running alignment equipment, and pads that reach a wider range of pinch weld and frame contact points than a basic maintenance lift needs. Tell us up front that alignment is the primary use case and we’ll spec the columns and arm package accordingly, instead of setting you up with a general-purpose lift that fights you every time you’re chasing a caster angle.
Sequencing Your Build: Concrete, Power, Then Lift
The order you tackle a farm shop build-out matters. Pour or confirm your concrete first, run your electrical service second, and only then finalize your home garage car lift system order, because the lift choice can change your power needs. A hydraulic 2-post typically needs a dedicated 220V circuit near the power unit, and if you’re also running an air compressor for impact guns and alignment tools, plan that circuit separately so you’re not tripping breakers mid-job.
We see farm shops make the mistake of finishing the building completely, then discovering the lift they wanted needs a different bay layout than they built for. Send us your floor plan while it’s still on paper, even a rough sketch, and we’ll flag clearance issues before concrete gets poured. It’s a lot cheaper to move a stud wall on paper than to jackhammer a slab after the fact.
Mechanical vs Hydraulic for Occasional Use
If your farm shop lift sees light duty — maintenance a few times a month rather than daily production work — a mechanical or hydraulic 2-post both hold up fine, but the maintenance schedules differ. Hydraulic lifts need periodic fluid checks and occasional cylinder seal attention; mechanical or screw-drive lifts need lubrication of the drive components on a schedule. Neither is a burden for occasional use, but if your shop sits unheated through an Iowa winter, ask us about cold-weather hydraulic fluid so the lift doesn’t feel sluggish the first time you use it in January.
We also recommend farm customers with occasional-use lifts still do a quick visual inspection before every use season — check cables or hydraulic lines, check that safety locks engage cleanly, and grease what needs grease. A lift that sits idle for weeks at a time benefits from that once-over more than a lift running five days a week, simply because problems don’t announce themselves until you’re mid-lift.
Mobility and Multi-Use Bays
Some farm shops want a lift that isn’t permanently anchored in one spot, especially in a shared bay used for equipment storage in winter. If that’s you, ask about mobile column lifts instead of a fixed 2-post or 4-post — they let you lift a vehicle wherever it’s parked and roll the columns out of the way afterward. It’s a different category of home garage car lift system than a bolted-down 2-post, but for a farm shop that changes uses seasonally, the flexibility is worth the conversation.
For most owners doing dedicated alignment and maintenance work, though, a permanently anchored 2-post remains the simplest, most cost-effective setup, and it’s what we install most often in central Iowa farm shops. The key is matching the anchor pattern and lift footprint to a spot in the bay you won’t need to clear later for other equipment.

The fastest way to get a real number instead of a ballpark is to give us the five things every farm shop quote needs: ceiling height, door height, concrete thickness and age, heaviest vehicle weight, and primary use case.
