Why Home Garage Electrical Prep Comes First

Most home garage lifts run on a 220-240 volt single phase circuit, which is a step up from the standard 110 volt outlets that power your lights, garage door opener, and chest freezer. If your garage was built before a lift was ever part of the plan, there’s a good chance you don’t have a dedicated 220 volt circuit anywhere near the lift’s footprint. That’s the first thing home garage electrical prep has to solve, and it’s not something you want to discover the day the truck shows up.

We tell every home customer the same thing: figure out your power situation before you order the lift, not after. A two post or four post home lift power unit typically draws enough current that it needs its own dedicated breaker, not a shared circuit with your air compressor or a space heater. Home garage electrical prep means walking your garage, finding your panel, counting open slots, and figuring out whether you’re running new wire from the panel or tapping into something already close. Get that sorted early and the actual lift installation goes fast. Skip it and you’re waiting on an electrician while a lift sits crated in your driveway.

Voltage and Amperage: Know Your Lift’s Requirements

Before you can do any home garage electrical prep, you need the actual spec sheet for the lift you’re buying, because requirements vary by model and motor size. Most residential two post and four post lifts from BendPak or Atlas use a single phase 220-240 volt motor, but amperage draw and recommended breaker size differ across models. Some smaller home lifts step down to a lighter draw, while heavier duty units built more like commercial lifts pull more current and need a larger breaker and heavier gauge wire to match.

This is the point where home garage electrical prep really pays off, because guessing wrong costs you twice. Undersized wire on a long run from the panel causes voltage drop, which shows up as a lift that runs sluggish, hums under load, or trips breakers when it’s cold. We always tell customers to run their planned wire gauge and breaker size by us or by their electrician before pulling wire, especially if the panel is a long run from where the lift will sit in the garage. It’s a five minute phone call that saves a rewire.

Where the Outlet Actually Needs to Go

Location matters as much as voltage in home garage electrical prep. The power unit on most two post and four post lifts sits at one specific post, and that’s where the outlet needs to be, not just somewhere convenient on the nearest wall. If you put the outlet in the wrong spot, you’re either running an extension cord to a 220 volt motor, which nobody should do, or you’re paying an electrician to move it after the fact.

Before your lift arrives, pull up the layout drawing or ask us where the power unit mounts for your specific model. Home garage electrical prep should include marking that exact spot on the floor and measuring from your panel so your electrician can quote the job accurately. We’ve seen garages where the outlet ended up behind where the car parks, which meant the cord ran right across the floor. A little planning avoids all of that, and it makes the finished install look like it was meant to be there instead of added on.

Panel Capacity: Do You Have Room to Add a Circuit

A lot of older Iowa homes have panels that are already close to full, and that’s a real obstacle in home garage electrical prep. Home garage lifts get installed on concrete, and that means your electrical run usually has to go through conduit, either surface mounted along the wall or run underground if you’re doing new construction. Home garage electrical prep should account for this early because conduit runs take planning, especially if you want the finished look of a clean wall-mounted disconnect instead of a cord running across your garage floor.
