Measure Your Ceiling Before You Fall in Love With a Model

Ceiling height is the first gate, and it eliminates more lifts than anything else. Grab a tape measure and get three numbers: the lowest point of your ceiling (usually a garage door track, a light fixture, or a header), the height of your open garage door in its fully raised position, and the clear height under any HVAC ductwork or trusses. Write them down before you shop. A homeowner who tells us “about ten feet” and turns out to have 9’2″ to the bottom of the door track has just changed the entire recommendation.

With 9 to 10 feet of clear ceiling, you’re generally in mid-rise scissor or low-profile 4-post territory — enough to get a car up for storage or wheels-off work, but not enough to walk under a truck. At 11 to 12 feet, a full 2-post asymmetric or a taller 4-post becomes realistic, and that’s where most homeowners really want to end up. Above 12 feet you have options most commercial shops would envy. The other trap is the garage door itself: many homeowners can gain a foot or more by converting to a high-lift or low-clearance door track kit, and that conversion is often cheaper than settling for a shorter lift you’ll outgrow. Your Concrete Slab Decides More Than You Think

A 2-post lift transfers the entire weight of the vehicle into a handful of anchor bolts, and those anchors need real concrete under them. Most manufacturers want a minimum of 4 to 6 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days, with no expansion joints or cracks under the baseplates. Iowa residential slabs are a mixed bag. 2-Post vs 4-Post: Answer This Question First

Here’s the question that settles it: are you working on cars, or storing them? If the honest answer is “working,” a 2-post wins. Wheels hang free, you get unobstructed access to suspension, brakes, exhaust, and the whole underbody, and the footprint is smaller than most people expect. Asymmetric arm designs let you open the doors once the vehicle is up, which matters in a tight garage where you’re climbing in and out repeatedly.

If the answer is “storing,” or “a little of both,” a 4-post is the better buy. Drive on, drive off, no anchoring, and with a rolling jack bridge you can still get wheels off when you need to. Power, Capacity, and the Specs That Actually Matter

Most home lifts we install run on 208-230V single phase, which means a dedicated 20 or 30 amp circuit and, for a lot of homeowners, a call to an electrician. Some smaller scissor and portable units run on 110V, and that convenience is real — but you trade lift speed and often capacity for it. Budget for the electrical work up front; it’s the line item people forget and then resent.

On capacity, don’t overthink it, but don’t undershoot either. A 9,000 lb lift handles essentially every passenger car, crossover, and half-ton pickup on Iowa roads. Clear the bay, get the power run before we arrive, and the whole day goes smoothly.
