That is exactly why we built a home garage lift installation checklist we run through on the phone before anyone buys hardware or pours concrete. Start With the Slab, Not the Lift

Concrete is item number one on our home garage lift installation checklist because it is the one thing you cannot fix cheaply after the fact. Most two-post lifts want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and a lot of manufacturers now spec four and a quarter inches for their taller columns. The problem in Iowa is that a residential garage slab poured in 1978 is frequently three and a half inches at the edges, unreinforced, and sitting on fill that was never properly compacted. We have cored slabs in older neighborhoods around Des Moines and found two and a half inches over sand.

You have two ways to check. The cheap way is to drill a test hole with a masonry bit near where a column will land and measure your depth. The better way, if you are already spending real money on the lift, is to have us core-sample it during the site visit. If the slab comes up short, you are not out of options — a cut-and-pour pad, typically a section about four feet by six feet at full depth with rebar and a proper cure, runs a fraction of what a lift costs and lasts forever. Alternatively, a four-post lift spreads load across four runways and is far more forgiving of marginal concrete, which is why we steer a lot of homeowners toward one when the slab is questionable. Cure time matters too: fresh concrete needs 28 days before anybody anchors into it, and we will not shortcut that.

Measure Ceiling Height Three Different Ways

Almost every homeowner who calls us has one ceiling number in their head, and it is usually the wrong one. What you actually need are three measurements: finished floor to the lowest structural obstruction, finished floor to the underside of the open garage door when it is retracted on its tracks, and finished floor to the bottom of any light fixture, opener rail, or duct run in the lift’s footprint. That garage door number sinks more projects than anything else. A standard sectional door on a curved track hangs seven or eight inches below the ceiling joists when open, and that is where the top of your truck cab is going to meet it.

For a two-post asymmetric lift, we like to see 11 feet of clear height to work comfortably on a pickup, and 12 feet if you want to stand under a lifted crew cab with the arms high. Ten feet works, but you will be lifting sedans and getting creative with trucks. For a four-post storage lift stacking two cars, add the height of the lower vehicle, the runway thickness, and the upper vehicle’s height, then leave four to six inches of margin. If your ceiling is genuinely short, a high-lift track conversion on the garage door buys you eight to ten inches, and a low-rise scissor or a mid-rise gets you off the ground without any overhead demand at all. Write all three numbers down before you shop.

Power, Air, and Where the Cords Actually Run

Most residential two-post and four-post lifts ship with a power unit that runs on either 110V single-phase or 220V single-phase, and the honest answer is that 220V is what you want. The 110V option works and plenty of homeowners run one for years, but it draws hard on startup, it is slower going up, and it hates long extension cords and shared circuits. A dedicated 220V, 30-amp circuit with a proper disconnect is a modest electrician bill and it removes a whole category of nuisance problems — nuisance breaker trips, motor heat, slow rise on a cold January morning in an unheated garage.

The other half of this item on the home garage lift installation checklist is location. Decide which side of the lift the power unit lives on before the electrician shows up, because moving that box later means re-running hydraulic hose and conduit. Think about where the hose crosses the floor: on a two-post, the overhead or floorplate hose routing has to clear whatever you drive over it, and on a four-post the lines usually tuck under a runway. If you plan to run air tools, get a drop near the lift too, since most four-post lifts use an air-release for the mechanical safety locks and you do not want a compressor hose stretched across the bay every time you lower a car. Sketch it out. Ten minutes with a pencil saves a Saturday.

Bay Layout, Door Swing, and Real-World Clearance

Manufacturer footprint dimensions are the columns and the baseplate, not the space you need to work. On a two-post, we plan for at least three feet of walking room behind each column, more if there is a workbench or a water heater on that wall. Arms swing wide when they are fully extended and unloaded, and we have seen brand-new drywall punched by a swing arm on day one. Measure the diagonal path a vehicle takes coming through the door, because a lift positioned dead-center in a two-car garage sometimes leaves no way to get the second vehicle past it.

Also account for what is above and behind: garage door opener motor head, retracted door panels, ceiling storage racks, and the truss or joist you might want to hang a hoist from later. If you have a floor drain, a radon pipe, in-floor heat tubing, or post-tension cable in the slab, mark it. In-floor heat is the one that gets people — drilling an anchor through PEX tubing turns a lift install into a concrete repair and a heating repair on the same afternoon. When we do a site visit in central Iowa we walk the bay with a tape and a scan tool and mark column locations in chalk before anything is unboxed. That is the step we would never skip, and it is why a proper home garage lift installation checklist starts on paper and ends with chalk on the floor.

Anchors, Shims, and Getting the Columns Plumb

Anchoring is where the home garage lift installation checklist stops being about planning and starts being about craft. Use the wedge anchors the manufacturer supplied, in the diameter and embedment depth they specify — not whatever is in the bucket on your shelf. Drill with a hammer drill and a fresh bit, blow the hole clean, and torque to the printed spec with an actual torque wrench. An anchor set in a dusty hole can read tight and still pull under load, and pulling anchors on a two-post column with a car in the air is a bad afternoon.

Then get the columns plumb. Concrete slabs slope toward the door for drainage, usually an eighth of an inch per foot, which means your columns will lean unless you shim them. Manufacturers include shim plates for exactly this reason, and the limit is typically half an inch of total shim under a baseplate — beyond that you need to grind the slab or address it properly. Check plumb on both axes with a four-foot level, shim, then re-torque the anchors after shimming because the shims change the load path. On a four-post, the equivalent step is leveling the four columns to each other so the runways sit flat and the safety locks engage in the same notch on all four corners. If one lock drops a click later than the others, the vehicle sits crooked and cable tension goes uneven fast.

Cables, Locks, and the First-Lift Function Test

Before a vehicle ever goes on it, we run the lift empty through its whole travel two or three times and listen. On a four-post, that means checking equalizer cable tension at all four corners — the runways should stay level within a quarter inch through the entire rise, and if one corner lags, the cable needs adjustment at the take-up. On a two-post, the equalizer cables and the sheaves at the top of each column need to be seated properly and lubricated, and the arm restraints should click positively and hold.

Then test every safety, deliberately. Raise it, release the locks, and confirm the mechanical latches catch. Verify the overhead cutoff bar or the limit switch actually stops the motor before a roof hits the crossbeam. Check the hydraulic hose fittings for weeping after the first few cycles, because fittings often need a quarter turn once the system has seen pressure. Bleed the cylinders per the manual so both sides rise together. Finally, do a loaded test with something you do not care about deeply — an older sedan, not the restoration project — and go up in stages, stopping at knee height to check stability before you commit. What Happens After the Install: Inspection and Upkeep

A lift is not appliance-grade equipment you forget about. Once a year, we tell homeowners to do a walkaround: look at the cables for broken strands or flat spots, check anchor torque, grease the sheaves and slider blocks, inspect arm pins and restraint gear teeth, and top the hydraulic reservoir with the fluid type the manufacturer calls for. Chains and cables stretch during the first few months of use, so plan on one adjustment early even if nothing feels wrong. On a four-post, check that all four locks still engage in the same notch — drift there is the earliest warning of a cable problem.

Homeowners often ask whether they need any kind of formal inspection. In Iowa, residential lifts are not inspected the way a commercial shop’s equipment is under ALI standards, but the mechanics of failure are identical, and a certified annual inspection is cheap insurance if you are storing a car overhead or working under one regularly.
