Start With Your Ceiling, Not the Lift Catalog

A two-post lift needs enough clearance for the vehicle to rise fully with the arms locked, plus a safety margin above that. We routinely get calls from homeowners who measured to their garage door track or a ceiling joist instead of the true lowest obstruction — light fixtures, door openers, ductwork, sprinkler heads. Any of those can turn a 10-foot ceiling into an effective 9-foot problem the day the lift arrives.
Measure from the finished floor straight up to the single lowest point in the lift’s swing path, not just the center of the bay. If you’re tight on height, that’s exactly why four-post lifts and low-rise scissor lifts exist — they carry the vehicle lower and need less overhead room than a full two-post rise. This is the first fork in the road for anyone doing home garage lift planning, and it’s the one that eliminates entire product categories before you even look at weight capacity.
Know Your Slab Before You Fall in Love With a Model
The second pillar of home garage lift planning is what’s underneath your feet. Most home garage slabs were poured for parking a car, not anchoring 3,000+ pounds of steel that will be lifting another 3,000 to 9,000 pounds dozens of times a year. Two-post lifts in particular concentrate enormous point loads into four small anchor patterns, and if your slab is thin, cracked, or was poured in stages, those anchors won’t hold the way the manufacturer’s spec sheet assumes.
We typically want to see 4 inches of solid, uncracked, properly cured concrete for most two-post home lifts, more for heavier-duty units. A four-post or a mobile column setup spreads weight over a much larger footprint and asks a lot less of a marginal slab, which is why we steer a lot of home garage lift planning conversations there when someone has an older or thinner floor. If you have any doubt, core sample it or have a contractor check before you order — a lift is only as safe as the slab holding it down.
Match Lift Capacity to What You Actually Drive

If there’s any chance a heavier truck or a project vehicle enters the picture, size up. Plan the Bay Width and Approach, Not Just the Lift Footprint
A lift itself might only need an 11 or 12-foot footprint, but home garage lift planning has to account for door swing, arm sweep, and the space to actually walk around a raised vehicle. We ask people to think about opening both car doors while the vehicle is up, rolling a tool cart underneath, and still having room to walk the perimeter without turning sideways. Cramped installs are usable, but they’re never enjoyable, and they make routine maintenance harder than it needs to be.
Also plan your approach angle into the bay. Two-post lifts have posts that need clearance to swing arms fully, and if your garage door opening is narrower than the space between posts, you’ll be threading vehicles in at an angle every time. Sketch your garage to scale, mark the post locations, and drive the sketch mentally with your actual vehicle before you commit to a spot on the floor.
Don’t Forget Electrical Until the Lift Is on Site
Power gets overlooked constantly in home garage lift planning because it feels like the easy part — until the lift arrives and the included cord doesn’t reach a suitable outlet, or the circuit isn’t rated for the motor’s draw. Most home two-post and four-post lifts run on standard household voltage, but the circuit needs to be dedicated and correctly sized, not shared with the freezer and the shop lights.

Delivery, Freight, and Getting It Off the Truck
Lifts ship on pallets by freight carrier, and they’re heavier and more awkward than most homeowners expect — often 1,500 to 3,000+ pounds spread across a couple of crates. Residential deliveries usually mean curbside drop with a liftgate, which means you need a way to move crates the rest of the way — a pallet jack, an engine hoist, or extra hands.
