Start Home Shop Planning With the Vehicle, Not the Building
Every round of home shop planning we’ve sat in on that started with the building instead of the vehicle ends up with someone squeezing a truck into a space that was sized for a sedan. Before you sketch a single wall, figure out the tallest, widest, longest vehicle that will ever park in that shop, including the one you might buy in five years. A full-size pickup or a lifted truck needs real ceiling height and door clearance that a sports car never will, and it’s much cheaper to build that in now than to raise a roof later.
We ask every homeowner the same three questions before we talk lift models: what do you drive now, what might you drive later, and what do you actually want to work on. Someone doing oil changes and brake jobs has very different needs than someone planning to do full engine swaps or frame work. Home shop planning that skips this step tends to produce shops that are technically finished but functionally cramped, and retrofitting a garage after the fact is always more expensive than getting the dimensions right the first time.
Ceiling Height Drives Everything Else
Ceiling height is the single most common reason we get called about a lift that doesn’t fit, and it’s almost always because home shop planning happened without a tape measure pointed straight up. A two post lift needs enough clearance above the vehicle at full rise to actually be useful, and that number changes depending on the model and the height of what you’re lifting. If your garage has ductwork, garage door tracks, or a lower truss height near the walls, those obstructions matter more than the peak height in the middle of the room.
We tell people to measure the lowest point in the specific spot where the lift will sit, not the highest point in the room, because that’s the number that actually governs what fits. If you’re still in the design phase, this is the cheapest problem you’ll ever fix, since raising a truss height by a foot during framing costs a fraction of what it costs after the roof is on. Good home shop planning treats ceiling height as a non-negotiable early constraint, not something to solve after the walls go up.
Slab Thickness and Reinforcement Aren’t Optional
A lift is only as good as the concrete underneath it, and this is the part of home shop planning that gets skipped more than any other because it happens before anyone’s excited about picking equipment. Most two post and four post lifts need a slab of a specific minimum thickness with proper reinforcement, poured to spec rather than however the contractor usually does driveways. If the slab is too thin or the mix wasn’t right, no anchor bolt pattern will hold a lift safely under load, and we’ve had to turn down installs because the existing concrete simply wasn’t rated for it.
If you’re pouring new concrete for a home shop, get the lift model picked out first and pull the anchoring specs before the forms go in. It’s a five-minute call to us, and it saves you from cutting and repouring a section of slab later. This is one of the clearest examples of why home shop planning has to happen in a specific order, because the concrete decision locks in everything that comes after it.
Power and Compressed Air Need Room to Grow
Electrical is another area where home shop planning pays for itself. A basic hobby garage might run on a single circuit, but a real home shop with a lift, an air compressor, welding equipment, and shop lighting needs a panel with actual capacity, not just enough for today’s tool list. We’ve seen plenty of otherwise great home shops where the owner has to unplug the compressor to run a welder, and that’s a planning failure, not a bad-luck situation.
Think about where the lift’s power unit will sit and where your air lines will run before you close in walls. Running conduit and air line while studs are still open costs far less than surface-mounting everything later or cutting into finished drywall. Layout Determines Whether the Shop Actually Works
You can have the right lift, the right slab, and the right power, and still end up with a shop that’s frustrating to use every single day if the layout is wrong. Home shop planning has to account for door swing, workbench access, tool storage, and how you’ll actually move a vehicle in and out with the lift raised. We’ve walked into shops where the lift was installed dead center and now nothing else fits around it, forcing awkward compromises for the life of the building.
Sketch your layout with the lift raised to full height and a vehicle sitting on it, then walk the space in your head, or better yet with tape on the floor of the actual garage. Consider where you’ll stand to work, where tools live, and whether a second vehicle needs to move in the same space. Match the Lift to the Shop, Not the Other Way Around
A lot of home shop planning goes sideways because someone falls in love with a lift model before confirming it fits the space, the power, and the budget realistically available. Two post lifts are the workhorse choice for most home garages doing general repair work, four post lifts are better for storage and alignment-style work, and low-clearance and portable options exist for garages that simply can’t support a full in-ground or overhead installation. The right answer depends entirely on your ceiling, your slab, and what you actually plan to do in the space.
We’d rather talk you out of the wrong lift during planning than show up to an install that doesn’t work. That’s genuinely the most useful thing home shop planning does: it forces the equipment decision to happen with real numbers instead of guesswork.
