When people ask how much space do you need for a 4 post lift, we start with the runway dimensions, not the overall building. A typical 4 post lift runway setup runs somewhere in the range of 18 to 19 feet long by roughly 12 feet wide for the full footprint, including approach ramps and the space between the two runways. That’s the equipment itself — it doesn’t include walking room. Shorter home-garage models can be a bit tighter, but you’re still looking at close to that same ballpark once you account for the ramps at both ends that let a vehicle drive up onto the platforms.
Width between the runways matters just as much as overall length. Most 4 post lifts need a minimum clear width of about 10 to 12 feet for the runway assembly alone, and that’s before you add space on either side for the support columns, control box, and a person walking a lug wrench or floor jack around the vehicle. We always tell customers: measure your garage door opening too, because a runway-style lift is only useful if the vehicle can actually drive onto it in a straight line without clipping a door frame or turning too sharply right at the threshold.
Ceiling Height and Vehicle Clearance
Ceiling height is where a lot of garage plans fall apart. A 4 post lift raises a vehicle several feet in the air, and you need enough headroom above the vehicle’s highest point — antenna, roof rack, whatever’s up there — plus the lift’s own overhead safety mechanism, plus a buffer so nobody’s ducking under a garage door track. As a rule of thumb, we tell people to plan for at least 12 feet of ceiling height for a full-rise commercial 4 post lift, and closer to 10 to 11 feet minimum for a home-garage model at partial rise. If your garage has open trusses, ductwork, or a garage door opener rail hanging down, measure to the lowest obstruction, not the ceiling itself.
This is also where a lot of homeowners get surprised, because they measured the room but forgot the vehicle. A full-size pickup or SUV sitting at full lift height can eat up more vertical space than a sedan by a foot or more. If your shop services taller vehicles regularly, build in extra headroom now rather than finding out later that your lift tops out three feet from where you need it.
Side Clearance and Walk-Around Room
Beyond the footprint of the lift itself, you need clearance on all sides to actually work. We generally recommend at least 2 to 3 feet of clear space on each side of the runways so a technician can walk around comfortably, roll a creeper underneath, or wheel in a transmission jack. If you’re planning to park another vehicle beside the lift while it’s in use, add that vehicle’s width plus another foot or two of door-swing room. Garages that look spacious on paper often get cramped fast once the lift, a workbench, a tool chest, and a second car are all competing for the same square footage.
Don’t forget the ends, either. Most 4 post lifts need clear space beyond the front and rear ramps for vehicles to approach in a straight line, and if you’re adding a rolling jack bridge or caster kit, that setup needs its own storage nook when it’s not in use. We’ve walked into more than one shop where the lift itself fit fine, but there was no room left to open a truck’s tailgate or swing a door fully open once the vehicle was raised.
Anchoring, Slab Thickness, and Floor Space Beyond the Lift
Space isn’t only about square footage — it’s also about what’s underneath your feet. A 4 post lift depends on a solid, adequately thick concrete slab, and if your existing floor doesn’t meet the minimum thickness or PSI rating, that changes your options before you even get to layout. We check slab specs on every installation quote we send out, because no amount of open floor space matters if the concrete can’t take the load. If you’re pouring new concrete specifically for the lift, plan the pad size around the full footprint plus clearance, not just the runway dimensions on a spec sheet.
We also recommend leaving a little extra room around the perimeter for future service work — hydraulic hose runs, power drops, and the occasional need to pull a runway out slightly for maintenance. A tight install that works on day one can turn into a headache during a service call two years later if there’s zero slack anywhere in the layout.
4 Post Lift vs 2 Post: Space Trade-Offs

A 4 post lift generally needs a longer, wider footprint than a comparable 2 post lift because of the drive-on runways, but it doesn’t require the same overhead structural anchoring, and many shops find it easier to work around for alignment and storage duty. In general, if your garage is on the narrower side but has decent length, a 2 post setup might squeeze in where a 4 post won’t. If you have width to spare and want the extra convenience of parking a vehicle up on the lift for long-term storage, the 4 post design usually wins. Either way, measuring first saves you from an expensive layout mistake.
Multi-Bay Shops and Storage-Only Setups
Commercial shops asking how much space do you need for a 4 post lift often aren’t just fitting one unit — they’re planning for two, three, or more side by side, sometimes with a rolling jack bridge shared between bays. In that case, spacing between adjacent lifts needs its own buffer, typically several feet beyond the side clearance we mentioned earlier, so technicians and equipment can move between bays safely. We size these layouts out on paper before any concrete work happens, because retrofitting spacing after lifts are anchored is far more expensive than planning it up front.
For home garages using a 4 post lift purely for vehicle storage rather than active repair work, you can often tighten the side clearance somewhat since you’re not routinely working underneath a raised vehicle. Even then, we still recommend enough room to open doors fully and walk the perimeter comfortably — storage lifts get used for oil changes and quick repairs more often than owners initially plan for.
