Figuring out how to choose a two post lift capacity is the single decision that shapes everything else about your lift purchase — column height, arm design, concrete requirements, even how much of your bay you lose to the equipment. We get this call several times a week at our shop in Ames, Iowa, usually from someone who has a spreadsheet of models in front of them and no idea whether 10,000 lb is plenty or a mistake waiting to happen. The honest answer is that capacity is not about the heaviest truck you can imagine driving through the door. It is about the vehicles you actually service, week after week, plus a sensible margin. Start With Your Actual Vehicle Mix, Not Your Worst-Case Fantasy

The first question we ask is simple: what rolled through your bays last month? Not what might show up someday, but what actually came in. A general repair shop in a small Iowa town told us they needed 18,000 lb because “farmers bring in big trucks.” We asked them to think through a typical week. It was mostly half-ton pickups, a handful of crossovers, a couple of three-quarter-ton diesels, and one dually every few weeks. That is a 12,000 lb shop, not an 18,000 lb shop — and the difference in floor space, column footprint, and installed cost was significant.

Write down your five heaviest regular vehicles and find their gross vehicle weight rating, not curb weight. GVWR is the number the manufacturer says the vehicle can legally weigh loaded, and it is the conservative figure we use for sizing. A modern half-ton crew cab runs around 7,000 lb GVWR. A three-quarter-ton diesel lands near 10,000. A one-ton dually can push 12,000 to 14,000. Sprinter and Transit vans surprise people — a loaded high-roof cargo van gets close to 10,000 lb with a very awkward weight distribution. The Margin Rule We Use on Every Quote

Once you know your heaviest regular vehicle, add roughly 20 to 25 percent. That is the working margin we recommend, and it exists for reasons that have nothing to do with being cautious for its own sake. Lift ratings are total capacity split across four arms, and real vehicles do not load evenly. Pull a transmission out of a front-wheel-drive car and the balance shifts. Leave a full toolbox and 300 lb of gear in the bed of a pickup and you have changed the number. Add a plow mount, a service body, or a fifth-wheel hitch and you are further from the brochure weight than you think.

That margin also protects the components you never see. Hydraulic cylinders, lifting cables, sheaves, and the chains inside the columns all age faster when the lift runs near its ceiling every single day. We have replaced cables at five years on lifts that lived at 95 percent of rating and cables at fifteen years on identical lifts that averaged 60 percent. Same brand, same install, wildly different service life. So when someone asks us how to choose a two post lift capacity for a shop that mostly does brakes and alignments on light trucks, we usually land on 12,000 lb rather than 10,000 — the price gap is modest and the headroom pays for itself in parts you do not have to buy twice.

Where the Common Capacity Tiers Actually Fit

Two post lifts cluster into a handful of ratings, and each one has a natural home. Nine and ten thousand pound lifts are the right call for a home garage, a used car lot, a detail shop, or any operation working exclusively on cars, crossovers, and half-ton pickups. Twelve thousand pound units are the workhorse of independent repair — they handle everything a 10K does plus three-quarter-ton diesels and loaded vans without living at redline. Fifteen thousand pound lifts start showing up in fleet shops and dealerships that see one-tons, box vans, and shuttle buses.

Above that, eighteen thousand pounds and up gets into ambulance, tow truck, and light medium-duty territory, and at that point the conversation shifts from capacity alone to arm reach, column spacing, and drive-through clearance. A tall service body needs adjustable-height adapters and a lot of overhead room, and the taller the vehicle the more the lift’s own geometry matters. Your Concrete Sets a Real Ceiling

Here is where a lot of Iowa buyers get blindsided. Capacity is not just a lift spec — it is a building spec. A 10,000 lb two post lift typically needs four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum. Step up to 12,000 and most manufacturers want more thickness, higher strength, or both. By 18,000 lb you are often looking at six inches or a poured footing pad, and anchor bolt embedment depth grows right along with it.

We have cored plenty of central Iowa slabs and found four inches where the owner swore there was six, or a slab poured over old fill with no rebar anywhere. Older shops on the edge of small towns are especially unpredictable — buildings that started as machine sheds in the sixties tend to have whatever slab was cheap that year. Before we install anything above 12,000 lb, we core a sample and check thickness and condition. Cutting out a section and pouring a proper footing is not a disaster, but it is a cost and a two-day delay you want to know about in advance, not on install morning. Overbuying Has Costs Too

Buyers who over-spec usually think they are being safe. Sometimes they are just spending money and losing space. Higher-capacity two post lifts have wider column bases, thicker steel, longer arms, and taller overhead assemblies. In a 24-foot bay with a 12-foot ceiling, an 18,000 lb lift can eat enough room that you cannot walk a transmission jack around the vehicle comfortably. We have seen shops rip out an oversized lift within two years, not because it failed, but because it made the bay miserable to work in.

There is also an operating cost. Bigger lifts use bigger cylinders and more fluid, so cycle times run longer — a few extra seconds per lift adds up across a dozen cars a day. Replacement cables, arm pins, and lock assemblies cost more too. And an 18K lift set to handle duallies still has to lift a Civic, which means arms swung all the way in and adapters stacked up on every single small car. Right-sized equipment is faster to work with and cheaper to maintain. Asymmetric, Symmetric, and Why Layout Interacts With Rating

Capacity does not exist in isolation from lift geometry. Symmetric two post lifts center the vehicle between the columns with equal-length arms — great for trucks and vans, and typically the choice at higher ratings. Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns and use unequal arms so the vehicle sits back, giving you door clearance to open a car door inside the lift. Most 10,000 lb units sold to general repair shops are asymmetric or versymmetric for exactly that reason.

Where this matters for sizing: an asymmetric lift places more load on the rear arms, so the effective margin at a given rating is tighter with a nose-heavy vehicle than the total number suggests. If your mix skews toward front-engine diesels and loaded vans, we lean symmetric and lean one tier up on capacity. If you are doing brake and suspension work on cars all day and need to get in and out of the driver’s seat, asymmetric at 10,000 or 12,000 lb is the better tool. Column height plays in too — a two post lift rated for 15,000 lb with a low overhead bar will not clear a high-roof van no matter what the capacity sticker says.
