Start With the Heaviest Vehicle You Actually Service
The honest starting point is not your daily driver — it’s the heaviest thing that will ever sit on those arms. Write down the gross vehicle weight of the worst-case vehicle in your world, not the curb weight from a brochure. A half-ton crew cab pickup with a topper, a full tank, tools in the bed, and a set of aftermarket wheels is heavier than the number most people quote from memory. A three-quarter-ton diesel with a service body can push past 9,000 lb all by itself, and a one-ton dually with a flatbed is a different conversation entirely.
We’ve walked into central Iowa shops where the owner sized the lift around their own car and then spent the next two years turning away farm trucks. That’s the expensive version of this mistake. When customers ask us how to choose car lift capacity, we tell them to look at the parking lot on their busiest day and size for the top of that range, then add margin. If you service a mixed fleet — sedans in the morning, a fifth-wheel tow rig in the afternoon — the lift has to serve the truck, because the truck is the one that can hurt somebody. A 10,000 lb rating handles most light-duty work honestly. A 12,000 lb rating handles it without you thinking about it, which is worth something on a Friday afternoon.
Understand What the Rating Number Really Covers
A lift’s capacity rating is the total load it’s certified to raise and hold, distributed as the manufacturer intended. That last part matters more than the headline number. On a two-post lift, the rating assumes a reasonable front-to-rear split — often something like 50/50 or 40/60 depending on the design — and if you park a vehicle so that one pair of arms carries far more than its share, you can overload half the lift while staying under the total rating. On a four-post, load distribution across the runways matters the same way, and on a mobile column set each column has its own individual rating that multiplies out to the system total.
ALI certification is the shortcut here. An ALI Gold Label means an independent lab loaded that model, tested it, and verified the rating and the safety systems rather than taking the factory’s word for it. When we spec Rotary or Challenger equipment for commercial shops, that label is part of why. It also matters for insurance and for state or municipal inspections in some jurisdictions. So when you’re working out how to choose car lift capacity, treat the certified rating as a hard ceiling you never approach, not a target. Nobody in this trade brags about running a lift at 98 percent of its label.
Build In Margin — 20 Percent Is the Number We Use
Our rule of thumb is simple: take your heaviest realistic vehicle and add at least twenty percent. If your worst case is 8,500 lb, you want a 10,000 lb lift minimum, and we’d nudge you toward 12,000 lb. That margin absorbs the things nobody plans for — a truck that comes in loaded, an engine hoist chained to the frame, a technician leaning hard on a breaker bar with the vehicle in the air, or a vehicle whose front-end weight bias eats up more of one side than expected.
Margin also buys you time. Vehicles have gotten heavier every single model year for two decades, and electric trucks made the jump dramatically — battery packs add well over a thousand pounds compared to a comparable gas truck, and some full-size electric pickups approach or exceed 9,000 lb before you load anything into them. A lift is a fifteen-to-twenty-five-year purchase. The capacity that feels generous today is going to feel adequate in ten years and tight in twenty. We have never once had a customer call us regretting that they bought too much capacity. We take the opposite call constantly, and the fix is a new lift, not an upgrade. Capacity Tiers and What Each One Is Actually For
Nine thousand pounds is the entry point and the most common home-garage rating. It’s genuinely fine for cars, crossovers, and light half-ton trucks, and it’s the tier where BendPak and Atlas home-shop equipment lives. Ten thousand pounds is the practical minimum for a working shop in farm country. Twelve thousand pounds covers three-quarter-ton and most one-ton pickups with real margin and is where a lot of Iowa general-repair shops land. Fifteen thousand pounds handles heavier duallies, box trucks, and light commercial vehicles.
Above that you’re in truck territory. Eighteen to thirty thousand pounds covers medium-duty trucks, shuttle buses, and larger commercial vehicles, usually on a two-post with extended columns or a four-post with long runways. Past 30,000 lb you’re generally looking at mobile column systems, where four or six columns each carry their own rated share and the total scales with how many you deploy — that’s how fleet shops and municipal garages lift fire apparatus and semi tractors. Capacity Isn’t the Only Constraint — Watch Ceiling and Concrete
We’ve had to deliver bad news on more than one job site: the lift was right, the building wasn’t. Higher-capacity lifts are physically bigger. Columns are taller, arms are longer, and rise height goes up. If you’ve got a nine-foot ceiling in a converted machine shed, a 15,000 lb two-post may not fit at all, and a full-rise lift certainly won’t. Measure to the lowest obstruction — garage door track, sprinkler heads, light fixtures, ductwork — not to the peak of the roof.
Concrete is the other hard limit, and it’s non-negotiable. Most 10,000 lb two-post lifts require somewhere around four inches of minimum 3,000 PSI concrete, and heavier ratings demand thicker slabs, higher strength, or a poured footing at each column. We core-test slabs on jobs where the history is unknown, because a lot of Iowa shop floors were poured decades ago for a different purpose. Anchoring a high-capacity lift into thin or cracked concrete is how anchors pull. Lift Style Changes the Capacity Conversation
The same rating means different things depending on the design. A two-post asymmetric lift at 10,000 lb is built around door clearance and lifting by the frame or pinch welds, which means arm reach and adapter height matter as much as the number. A four-post at the same rating is a drive-on platform — great for storage, alignment, and long wheelbases, and it spreads load over the runways rather than four arm pads.
Scissor and mid-rise lifts usually sit at lower capacities, in the 6,000 to 9,000 lb range, and they trade capacity and rise height for a small footprint and no overhead structure. Inground lifts can carry serious weight with a completely clear bay floor, but the capacity decision gets locked in when the cassette goes in the ground, so you plan for the shop you’ll have in twenty years. Mobile columns let you buy capacity incrementally — start with four columns, add two later.
