We’ve been installing and servicing lifts across Iowa for years, and the calls we dread most aren’t the broken-down ones — they’re the ones where a shop owner says “it’s been making a noise for a while.” A car lift is a machine holding a vehicle several feet above a person’s head, and it deserves the same respect you’d give a ladder or a jack stand, times ten. Start With a Walk-Around Before You Touch Anything

Every proper car lift safety inspection begins with the lift sitting empty, doors open, lights on. Walk the full perimeter and look at the concrete anchoring the posts. Hairline cracks radiating from an anchor bolt, a bolt head sitting slightly higher than the others, or a wet stain around the base are all signs the foundation is moving under load. This matters more in Iowa than people expect — our freeze-thaw cycles stress older slabs, and a lift that was anchored properly five winters ago can loosen without anyone noticing.

Next, look at the posts themselves for rust bubbling under paint, especially near the base where road salt and moisture collect all winter. Locking mechanisms deserve just as much attention. Raise the lift to a working height and listen for the locks engaging — you should hear a distinct, even click on both sides at the same time. If one side locks a beat after the other, or doesn’t lock at all, stop using the lift immediately. Inspect Arms, Pads, and Adapters for Wear

The arms and pads are what actually touch the vehicle, and worn ones are a leading cause of slippage. Check every arm for cracks at the pivot points and make sure the arm restraint pins or locks engage fully — arms that swing loose under load can shift a vehicle’s center of gravity mid-lift. Rubber pads and adapters wear down and harden over time, especially with exposure to oil and shop chemicals. If a pad is cracked, glazed, or compressed unevenly, it won’t seat properly against a vehicle’s lift points and can let the car slide sideways.

We also see a lot of mismatched adapters — extensions or blocks that weren’t designed for the specific lift model being forced into service because the correct part wasn’t on hand. Test the Hydraulic System for Leaks and Drift

With the vehicle raised to a full working height, watch the lift for several minutes without touching the controls. Look under the unit and around the cylinder for oil residue, since even a small leak indicates a seal that’s failing and will get worse under continued load.

Check hydraulic hoses for cracking, bulging, or soft spots, particularly near fittings where flexing happens most. Cylinders should move smoothly through their full range without hesitation, chatter, or uneven speed between sides on a two-post lift. If you notice the lift moving unevenly side to side, that’s often a sign of an equalization issue in the hydraulic or cable system rather than a simple wear item, and it’s worth a professional look before the next vehicle goes up.

Verify the Safety Labels, Rated Capacity, and Documentation

Every lift should have a legible capacity plate showing its rated weight, and if yours has faded to the point you can’t read it, that’s a red flag about the unit’s overall age and exposure. Cross-reference the rated capacity against the heaviest vehicles you actually lift — a lift rated for a sedan-heavy shop that’s now servicing three-quarter-ton trucks is running outside its design margin every single day.

Keep a written inspection log for each lift, even a simple clipboard sheet with dates and initials. Not only does this protect a shop if there’s ever an incident, it also creates a pattern you can spot trends in — if the same cable keeps needing adjustment every few months, that’s telling you something the individual inspection can’t. Load Test and Listen for Sound Changes

Sound tells you a lot about a lift’s condition. Run it up and down empty a few times and note any grinding, clunking, or squealing that wasn’t there before. Then run it with a typical vehicle load and listen again — sounds that only appear under weight usually point to a mechanical component under stress, like a worn bearing, a stretched chain, or a cylinder seal starting to give.

A proper load test also means confirming the lift stops smoothly at height and lowers evenly without jerking. Jerky motion under load is uncomfortable to watch and it’s uncomfortable for the equipment too — repeated shock loading accelerates wear on cables, arms, and locking mechanisms alike. If anything sounds or feels different from how the lift behaved a month ago, that’s reason enough to schedule a closer look rather than waiting for the next routine check.

Know When to Call a Professional Instead of DIY

A visual walk-around and basic function check is something every shop owner or home garage user can and should do regularly.
