Every year we get calls from shops and home garage owners in Iowa who bought a lift off Facebook Marketplace or an auction site, got it home, and then called us to figure out why it won’t hold a vehicle level. Knowing how to inspect a used lift before the money changes hands can save you thousands in repair parts, downtime, and in the worst cases, a genuinely dangerous piece of equipment sitting in your shop. Start With the Paper Trail, Not the Steel

Before you ever touch a wrench, ask for the make, model, and serial number. Every legitimate lift has a data tag riveted somewhere on the column or base — usually near the base plate on a two-post, or on the power unit housing for a four-post. No tag is a red flag. It could mean the lift was built before certain ALI safety standards, or that a tag was removed because the lift failed an inspection somewhere down the line. Run the serial through the manufacturer if you can, and ask the seller directly why they’re getting rid of it. Most honest answers are mundane — moving, downsizing, upgrading capacity — but vague or shifting answers are worth noting.

We also ask sellers for maintenance history, even informal notes. A lift that’s been greased, had cables replaced on schedule, and had its anchors checked annually is a very different purchase than one that’s sat outdoors under a tarp for three winters. If the seller can’t tell you basic install details — like whether it’s bolted to a slab with proper anchors or floating on shims — that tells you the lift probably wasn’t installed by a professional crew, which changes how much extra inspection work you’ll need to do once it’s in your bay.

Check the Columns and Structural Frame First

On a two-post or four-post lift, the columns are the backbone of the whole system, and this is where we start every physical inspection. Look for any bowing, twisting, or visible weld repairs on the columns. Factory welds are clean and consistent; field repairs often look rough, mismatched in color, or ground down unevenly. Run your hand along the column tracks where the carriage rides — you’re feeling for gouges, rust pitting, or flat spots that would cause binding. Surface rust is cosmetic and fixable. Pitting deep enough to catch a fingernail is structural and a much bigger problem.

Check the base plates and anchor bolts too, if the lift is still installed where you’re viewing it. Cracked concrete radiating out from an anchor point, missing anchor bolts, or anchors that spin freely when you try to snug them are all signs the lift was either installed wrong or has been overloaded. None of this is necessarily a dealbreaker — we relocate and reinstall used lifts on healthy Iowa slabs all the time — but it does mean budgeting for a fresh, code-correct installation rather than assuming you can just bolt it down as-is.

Test the Cables, Chains, and Locking Mechanisms

Cables and chains wear out even on lifts that look pristine otherwise, and this step is non-negotiable in any real inspection of a used lift. On cable-style two-post lifts, look closely for fraying, flat spots, kinks, or rust between the strands — a cable can look fine at a glance and still have broken strands hiding inside the wrap. Ask to see the lift cycle through a full raise and lower if at all possible. Listen for grinding or popping sounds, and watch whether both sides of the carriage rise evenly. Uneven rise usually points to a stretched cable, a worn equalizer cable, or a locking mechanism that isn’t releasing symmetrically.

The locking pawls or latches deserve their own close look. These are the mechanical safeties that catch the carriage if hydraulic pressure is lost, and they need to engage cleanly at every notch, not just some of them. If a seller is reluctant to run a full cycle for you, that’s a signal worth paying attention to. We’d rather you watch a lift run through several complete cycles in person than trust photos or a short video clip, because intermittent issues often only show up after the third or fourth cycle once components have warmed up or settled.

Inspect Hydraulics, Hoses, and the Power Unit

Hydraulic problems are usually easier to fix than structural ones, but they’re still important to catch before you agree on a price. Look under and around the power unit for oil residue on the floor — a little seepage around fittings is common on older units, but pooling oil or wet hoses point to a leak that needs addressing. Check hose routing for cracks, especially anywhere a hose bends sharply or rubs against metal. Cylinders should hold a raised vehicle without noticeable drift; ask the seller to raise it, shut off the power unit, and let it sit for several minutes while you watch for any downward creep.

Also check the fluid itself if you can get a look — cloudy, milky, or metallic-flecked hydraulic fluid suggests water contamination or internal wear inside the cylinder or pump. None of these hydraulic issues are usually deal-breaking on their own, since seals, hoses, and even full cylinders are replaceable parts we carry regularly. But every issue you find is leverage in the price conversation, and it helps you build an honest picture of what you’re actually buying versus what a quick coat of touch-up paint might be hiding.

Look Closely at Arms, Pads, and Adapters

The arms are what actually touch the vehicle, and worn arm pins or sloppy arm restraints are a common issue on lifts that have seen years of daily shop use. Grab each arm and check for excessive play at the pivot point — a little movement is normal, but noticeable slop means bushings or pins are worn out. Arm restraints, the mechanisms that keep arms from swinging out on their own, should hold firmly with no rattling. Check that the arms actually slide in and out smoothly along their full range, since rust or debris buildup can seize an arm in one position.

Rubber pads and adapters are the small parts people forget to check, and they’re exactly the kind of thing that turns into an annoying surprise later. Dry-rotted, cracked, or missing pads mean you’re inheriting an immediate parts order the moment the lift is installed. It’s a minor cost in the grand scheme, but it’s worth factoring into your offer, and it’s also worth asking whether the full set of adapters and extensions that came with the lift originally are actually included in the sale, since sellers sometimes part these out separately.

Watch the Vehicle Under Load, Not Just the Empty Lift

An empty lift can look and sound perfectly healthy and still have problems that only show up under real weight. If the seller will allow it, ask to see an actual vehicle raised on the lift, not just the bare carriage cycling up and down. Watch how the lift responds the moment weight comes on — any hesitation, uneven rise between posts, or unusual noise under load tells you far more than an empty cycle ever will. This is one of the most overlooked steps when people are learning how to inspect a used lift, and it’s often where real problems reveal themselves.

Pay attention to how the vehicle sits once it’s at full height too. It should be level side to side and front to back, with arms fully seated and locked. If you have access to a shop scale or even just a level, use it. A lift that holds an actual vehicle steady, quiet, and level at full height under real load has told you almost everything you need to know, and it’s the single best test available before you commit to buying.

Decide What’s a Repair and What’s a Walk-Away

Once you’ve gone through the structural, hydraulic, cable, and arm checks, it’s time to add it all up honestly. Worn pads, a leaking hose, faded paint, or minor surface rust are all normal wear items on a used lift and shouldn’t scare you off a fair deal — we replace these kinds of parts on installed lifts constantly, and most are inexpensive relative to the overall value of the equipment. Structural cracks in columns, missing or damaged data tags, anchor damage in the concrete, or a locking mechanism that won’t engage evenly are a different category entirely, and they’re the kind of issues that should either kill the deal or dramatically lower the price.
