Figuring out how to plan a multi bay shop layout is the single most important decision you’ll make before pouring concrete or ordering a single lift. We’ve walked into too many Iowa shops where the owner bought lifts first and figured out the floor plan later, and it always ends the same way: cramped bays, cars parked nose-to-tail because there’s nowhere else to put them, and technicians squeezing between columns to grab a tool cart. Start With the Vehicles, Not the Building

Before you sketch a single bay line, list exactly what you’re servicing. A shop running mostly light-duty sedans and pickups needs different bay widths and lift capacities than one handling one-ton duallies, RVs, or fleet vans. Nail down your realistic vehicle mix for the next five to ten years, not just what’s parked in your lot today, and size your bays and lift capacities to that.

Map Bay Width and Column Spacing Early

Most commercial two-post lifts need roughly 12 to 14 feet of clear bay width to operate comfortably with door swing and walk-around room, and four-post lifts generally need a bit more. When you’re mapping out how to plan a multi bay shop layout, work backward from your building’s column spacing — steel building columns are usually set on a grid, and you don’t want a support column landing in the middle of where a lift needs to sit.

We always recommend walking the building shell with lift dimensions taped out on the floor before any lift order goes in. Every lift needs power, and most shops run air lines to every bay for impact guns and tire equipment. Trenching or overhead routing needs to happen before the floor is finished, which means your electrical and air layout has to be locked in during the same planning pass as your bay layout — not as an afterthought once lifts are installed.

We recommend running conduit to every bay location even if you don’t plan to fill all of them with lifts immediately. Growth is easier when the infrastructure is already there. Two-post lifts typically need a dedicated circuit near the power unit, and four-post or alignment lifts often want their control box on a specific side depending on how you’re routing traffic. Sort this out on paper first, because moving a trenched line after concrete is poured is one of the most expensive mistakes a shop owner can make.

Mix Lift Types to Match Real Workflow

Not every bay needs the same lift. A shop that does alignments, tire work, and general repair benefits from mixing two-post lifts for general service, a scissor or mid-rise lift for tire and brake work, and possibly a four-post alignment lift in one dedicated bay. Understanding how to plan a multi bay shop layout means recognizing that a one-size-fits-all approach to lift selection wastes both floor space and money.

Planning with growth in mind means leaving conduit stubbed out, keeping at least one bay’s worth of open floor space unassigned, and choosing a building layout that can extend rather than requiring a full teardown.
