Figuring out how to plan your shop layout for a new lift is the single biggest thing that determines whether you love or hate your equipment for the next fifteen years. We’ve walked into more Iowa garages than we can count where a lift got dropped into whatever open floor space was left over, and within a month the owner was fighting a support column, a low duct, or a door swing every single day. Start With the Ceiling, Not the Floor

Every time we sit down with a shop owner in Iowa to plan a layout for a new lift, the first question we ask is ceiling height, not floor space. A two-post lift needs enough overhead room for the vehicle to clear the arms at full rise, plus a safety margin above that. We’ve seen shops order an 84-inch rise lift for a building with a 10-foot ceiling and end up unable to fully raise a full-size pickup without clipping a light fixture or a sprinkler head. Measure to the lowest point in the bay — not the highest — because ductwork, conduit, and lighting fixtures almost always hang lower than the roofline.

Once ceiling height is confirmed, we work backward to lift rise and overall height including the arm sweep at the top. This is also where door height matters if the vehicle needs to be driven in already raised on a trailer or dolly setup, which happens more than people expect in fleet and ag shops. Skipping this step is the number one reason we get emergency calls asking whether a lift can be modified after installation — and the honest answer is almost always no. Map Column and Post Clearance Before You Order

Two-post and four-post lifts both need real clearance on the sides for the columns, the arm swing, and for a technician to actually walk around the vehicle once it’s in the air. We generally tell customers to plan at least a few feet of clear space beyond the footprint of the lift itself on every open side, more if you’re running a two-post model where the arms extend outward when swinging into position. We also look at how the lift’s footprint interacts with adjacent bays. A four-post lift with a rolling jack bridge needs runway length behind it for the jack to travel, and that’s easy to forget when you’re staring at a floor plan on paper instead of standing in the actual space. We’d rather spend twenty minutes on a phone call reviewing your sketch than show up on install day and find out the columns won’t clear the neighboring lift’s arms when both are in use at the same time.

Plan for Power and Hydraulic Runs Early

Lifts need dedicated electrical circuits, and the further the power panel is from the intended lift location, the more that conduit run is going to cost you. When you plan your shop layout for a new lift, mark where your panel is on the drawing before you decide where the lift goes. We’ve saved customers real money simply by shifting a lift’s planned position ten feet closer to an existing panel instead of trenching a long run across a freshly poured floor.

The same logic applies to in-ground lifts, where hydraulic lines and cylinder placement need to be mapped against existing floor drains, footings, and any known slab thickness variations. We always recommend having us or another qualified installer look at core samples or existing floor plans before you finalize where an in-ground unit sits. Retrofitting power or hydraulic lines after a floor is finished is dramatically more expensive than running them during the original layout phase, so this step alone can be the difference between a project that stays on budget and one that doesn’t.

Think About Traffic Flow, Not Just Footprint

A lift doesn’t exist in isolation — it sits inside a shop where cars, techs, tool carts, and parts washers all need to move. When we help a customer plan a shop layout for a new lift, we ask how vehicles enter and exit the bay, where the tech’s tool chest lives, and whether a second lift or a parking spot is going to be squeezed in next to it later. Shops that only think about the lift’s footprint end up with awkward pinch points where a technician has to duck under an arm or a customer’s door can’t fully open.

We also think about how multiple lifts interact if you’re running more than one bay. Stagger the columns on adjacent two-post lifts and you’ll often gain enough working room that a shop can add a lift later without a full re-pour. Good traffic flow also protects your equipment — arms and hoses get damaged far more often from carts and vehicles clipping them in tight quarters than from any mechanical failure.

Match the Lift Type to the Work You Actually Do

Layout planning isn’t only about space — it’s about matching the lift type to your actual workflow. A quick-service shop doing tires and oil changes all day benefits from a different footprint than a diesel and ag repair shop pulling heavy components. If your bays see a mix of car lift work and heavier trucks, you may need to plan for a higher-capacity two-post model or even a four-post with a rolling bridge jack, and that changes your footprint math substantially. We walk through vehicle mix with every customer before we finalize a layout, because the wrong capacity or configuration causes far more headaches than a tight ceiling ever will.

Don’t Forget Storage, Airflow, and Lighting

A shop layout for a new lift also has to account for what happens around the lift once it’s installed — parts storage, air line routing, and lighting placement all compete for the same overhead and wall space. We regularly see lifts installed dead center in a bay with no thought given to where the air hose reel or the overhead light bar will end up, and technicians end up working in their own shadow. Plan air drops and lighting fixtures at the same time you plan the lift position, not after.

Ventilation matters too, especially in shops running diesel or performing a lot of undercar exhaust work. If the lift sits directly under a low-clearance exhaust extraction point, you may need to reroute the hose reel track before the lift goes in rather than after. These are small details on paper but they’re the difference between a bay that feels efficient every day and one that fights you constantly.
