The hydraulic cylinder on a 4-post lift is a single actuator — usually mounted under one of the runways or in the crossbeam — that pulls all four cables at once. The four equalizer cables run from that one cylinder rod, over the runway and crossbeam sheaves, and out to each column, which is why the whole lift raises evenly off one hydraulic circuit. You reach for this job when the rod goes wet, when the lift will not hold height overnight, or when the fluid keeps disappearing but there is no visible hose leak. The big thing that makes learning how to replace a 4-post lift cylinder different from the 2-post version is that the cables land on the cylinder rod and have to come off — so photographs and labels matter more than the wrenching. If you are not confident routing four cables back exactly the way they came, this is a job worth calling in.

Tools and prep

Have ready: a phone or camera for reference photos, a marker or tags for labeling cables, an adjustable wrench for the large jam nuts, a bungee cord, a ratchet strap, metal caps for the hose and port, a drain pan, and the correct replacement cylinder. Make the lift safe first: raise it to about chest height and lower it onto the locks, then keep holding the down button or release valve for 10 seconds after it settles so no pressure remains on the cylinder. Bungee-cord the lowering valve on the pump so the lever stays engaged during the swap. Do not stand in the drop zone while you break the hose loose.

Step-by-step: how to replace a 4-post lift cylinder

Before you disconnect a single cable, photograph everything. That one habit is what makes knowing how to replace a 4-post lift cylinder a clean job instead of a guessing game on reassembly.

Removal

  1. With the lift on the locks and pressure bled, take a photo of which cable goes on which sheave and which direction it faces. Then label each cable where it lands on the cylinder — driver-front #1, driver-rear #2, passenger-rear #3, passenger-front #4.
  2. Disconnect the cables from the cylinder rod. This usually means breaking loose large jam nuts with an adjustable wrench. Do not scratch the rod — a nick on the shiny part will cut the seal.
  3. Push the cylinder rod all the way into the barrel if you can. Disconnect the hydraulic hose, cap the hose, and cap the cylinder inlet port.
  4. Pull the cotter key, roll pin, or nut on the pin or bolt that pins the cylinder to the 4-post frame. Drive the pin out.
  5. With two people, pull the cylinder out from under the runway.

Install

  1. Slide the new cylinder into position under the runway. Install the mounting pin or bolt and the cotter key or nut that retains it.
  2. Remove the caps from the cylinder port and the hose, then connect the hose. Make sure the lowering valve is still bungeed open while you extend the rod — you may need to ratchet-strap the rod out far enough for the cables to reach.
  3. Using your photo and the cable labels, land each cable on its correct spot. Confirm the cables are routed correctly, not rubbing, fully seated in the sheaves, and facing the direction they came off.
  4. Tighten the large jam nuts with the adjustable wrench. Again — do not let the wrench slip and score the rod.
  5. Remove the bungee. Raise the lift off the locks; you may need to add oil. Lower it all the way and top off the reservoir.
  6. Cycle the lift up and down two or three times. At max height, verify the cable routing while the lift is under load. Look for leaks. Lower, and confirm the fluid is at the full line.

Fluid and oil

4-post lifts typically run ISO-32 hydraulic oil or Dexron ATF. Check what is in the reservoir before you top off — clear is ISO-32, red is ATF — and do not mix the two. Defer to the lift’s IOM for the exact reservoir capacity, and fill to the full line with the runways all the way down.

How to tell it’s time to replace

Replace the cylinder when the rod stays wet after wiping, when the lift drifts down overnight with no hose leak, or when you keep adding oil with nothing on the floor to explain it. While the cables are off, inspect the parts that share the cylinder’s hours: all four lifting cables for fraying, cording, kinks, and corrosion — if the rod was leaking onto a cable, that cable is done; the runway and crossbeam sheaves for wobble, groove wear, cracked sides, and bushings pushed out; the sheave pins, which groove from years of cable pressure (sand them and use anti-seize on reinstall); the lock ladders and both lock pawls, the air-actuated pawl and the cable-tensioned secondary pawl; and the slide blocks inside each column — metal-on-metal means the blocks are worn.

Safety

Never trust hydraulic pressure. Bleed it off by holding the lowering valve for 10 seconds after the lift is on the locks, and do not stand in the drop zone while you break the hose loose.
