The lowering valve — also called the release valve or dump valve — is the solenoid or manual valve on the pump that opens to let fluid flow back to the reservoir when you lower the lift. When it fails it does one of two things: it leaks internally and the lift descends by itself with a car on it, or it sticks and the lift will not lower at all. To diagnose, raise the lift to max height and watch it; if it drifts to the locks in less than an hour with no external leaks, the lowering valve is the answer. Tools and prep

Have ready: a 1/2-inch drive impact with impact sockets, clean hydraulic oil or vaseline for the o-ring, a pick for cleaning threads, and the correct replacement valve. Make the lift safe first. Lower the lift all the way down and keep holding the down button or release valve for at least 10 seconds after it is on the ground to bleed all pressure. If you are not sure the pressure is gone, crack a hydraulic line loose slightly — if it does not spray, you are safe to proceed.

  1. With the lift down and pressure bled, remove the plastic cover from the pump.
  2. Disconnect any electrical plug-ins going to the release valve (solenoid).
  3. Remove the handle if the valve is manual.
  4. Use the 1/2-inch drive impact and impact sockets to break the valve loose from the pump body.
  5. Clean the mounting surface on the pump — no debris, no old thread sealant. Pick any material out of the threads.
  6. Compare the new valve to the old one to confirm the same profile, o-ring size, and thread. Lubricate the new o-ring with clean hydraulic oil, grease, or vaseline.
  7. Thread the new valve in by hand as far as it will go. Then snug it with the impact — do not hammer on it. Use two-second bursts, not longer.
  8. Reconnect the electrical plug-ins if applicable. Reinstall the handle. Reinstall the plastic cover.
  9. Cycle the lift all the way up and all the way down twice. Look for leaks around the new valve and at the pump face where the old valve sat.

Installation lube

The valve o-ring seals on hydraulic oil, so use ISO-32, ATF, grease, or vaseline as the installation lubricant — never thread sealant, which will break loose and end up in the hydraulic system. A drop of the right lube on the o-ring is all it takes; the seal comes from the o-ring seating, not from torque.

The lowering valve is the culprit when the lift drifts down on its own with no external leak, or when it sticks and refuses to lower.
