A cylinder seal kit contains the wear band, rod seal, piston seal, spacer, o-rings, wiper seal, and on some designs a sponge-cloth wick that ride on the piston and inside the end cap of a hydraulic cylinder. When a cylinder starts weeping fluid down the rod and the barrel wall still looks clean — no scoring, no deep rust pitting — a seal kit brings it back to service without replacing the whole cylinder. That is the whole appeal of learning how to reseal a lift cylinder: it saves the cost of a new actuator on a cylinder whose bore is still good. But if the barrel is scored or heavily pitted, seals will not hold and the cylinder itself needs to be replaced or re-barreled — so the first real skill here is honest inspection, not wrenching.
Tools and prep
This is bench work. Take the cylinder out of the lift first using the appropriate 2-post, 4-post, or inground cylinder replacement guide, and bring it to a clean bench with a vise and a drain pan. Have ready: brake clean, a blow gun, a flashlight, a cylinder hone if you plan to clean up light scoring, safety glasses, a razor knife for cutting bulk wear band and sponge cloth, vaseline for assembly lube, wood blocks, three clean shop towels, and the correct seal kit. Everything from here assumes the cylinder is clamped in the vise with a drain pan under it. If the cylinder came off the lift full of pressurized fluid, you should already have held the lowering valve for 10 seconds — a pressurized cylinder sprays when you crack the fitting.
Step-by-step: how to reseal a lift cylinder
Teardown
- Drain the cylinder into the pan. Clean around the end cap with brake clean and a towel. Remove the plug from the inlet port if there is one.
- Identify how the end cap is held on. There are three main types: threaded (screws into or over the barrel), retainer clip (a steel clip that pushes out through a hole in the side of the barrel — rotate the cap and pry the ring up), or bolted (long threaded rods from the rear, or bolts through the cap into the barrel).
- Clean rust or paint off the end of the rod so the cap slides over it. Remove the cap. It may take a chisel gently driven between barrel and cap, or rotating the cap and pulling — if you can rotate it, you can usually work it off.
- Lay three clean towels out in a row. Put the end cap on one end. Pull the rod out of the barrel, keeping it centered as it comes; if it sticks, rotate it as you pull, and do not scratch the rod.
- Lay the rod on wood blocks next to the barrel, piston end toward the working end of the bench.
- Photograph the piston before you touch it. Remove everything from the piston in the order it comes off — typically wear band, seal, spacer, sponge cloth — and lay the parts on the towels in the exact order they came off.
- Remove the wear band, seal, spacer, o-ring, and wiper seal from the end cap. Lay them on the towels next to the piston parts.
- Pull the hydraulic fittings and any o-rings off them. Replace the o-ring or copper washer on the bleeder screw.
Inspect and clean
- Brake-clean the inside of the barrel with safety glasses on, blow it out, and shine a flashlight down the bore.
- Look for scoring (scratches down the wall) and rust pitting (tiny craters). Light scoring or shallow pitting can sometimes be cleaned up with a cylinder hone. Deep scoring or pitting means the barrel is done — cut it off and weld a new one on, or replace the whole cylinder.
- Wipe the rod and look at the seal-wear surface. If the rod is scored where the seal rides, no seal kit will save it.
Reassembly
- Lay the new wear bands, seals, spacers, o-rings, wiper seals, and sponge cloth next to the old ones and confirm the sizes match.
- For wear bands and sponge cloth that come as bulk stock, cut them to shape a hair oversize with a razor — you can always trim, you cannot add.
- Vaseline all the new seals, wear bands, and o-rings before installing. The sponge cloth needs vaseline or grease to hold in place.
- Slide the rod back into the barrel, rotating as you push. If it hangs up, the sponge cloth is usually pinched — back off and work it in with a pick or small screwdriver. A rubber mallet or a wood block and hammer can drive a stubborn rod home.
- Clean the end of the rod thoroughly and reinstall the end cap the way it came off. Reinstall the hydraulic fittings.
Bench test
- Hook the cylinder to a hydraulic test pump with an adapter as needed. Max it out and look for leaks. Wipe a finger across the rod — dry or lightly oily is fine; if your finger comes back wet, a seal is not sealing.
- Bungee the lowering valve on the test pump and push the rod back in, ratchet strap if needed. Disconnect the pump hose and plug the cylinder fittings. It is now bench-clean and ready to install.
Assembly lube
Use vaseline, not grease, on the seals during assembly — it lubricates the seal past the rod without contaminating the hydraulic system. Any grease that gets into the barrel ends up in the pump filter. This is one of the details that separates a reseal that lasts from one that comes back weeping in a month.
How to tell it’s time to replace instead of reseal
Before you order a kit, confirm the barrel is not scored or pitted — seals will not save a bad bore — and confirm the rod is clean and unscored where the rod seal rides. Know who built the cylinder: on Rotary 2-post cylinders that can be Pacoma or Panni, and the seal profiles differ, so read the cylinder body stamp before you order. If the cylinder is an aftermarket replacement it takes a different seal kit than the OEM part. When you understand how to reseal a lift cylinder, half the value is knowing when not to — a scored bore is a new-cylinder job.
Safety
Wear safety glasses when brake-cleaning the barrel or blowing it out. If the cylinder comes off the lift full of pressurized fluid, hold the lowering valve for 10 seconds first.
