Almost every shop we walk into that’s running hunter car lifts got there through their alignment equipment first. Hunter Engineering owns a huge share of the alignment-rack market, and when a shop invested in a HawkEye or PA200 alignment system a decade ago, buying the matching lift — typically an L-series 4-post like the L451-18K — made sense at the time for one-brand-per-bay consistency. The lifts came in with the alignment racks and never left.

Service Calls Across Multiple Platforms
The service call that comes in most often on any L-series 4-post is a stuck safety release, usually on the left rear leg. A garage in the Northeast called us recently about exactly that scenario: L451-18K 4-post, left rear safety release not releasing, needed a quote to fix. The mechanism itself is a mechanical latch pawl held in its pocket by spring pressure, released by a cable from the operator control. When any part of that chain corrodes, stretches, or seizes, the lift won’t drop.
We diagnose by isolating the failure: pull the release lever and check that the cable moves the pawl mechanically. If the cable moves but the pawl doesn’t clear, the latch itself is stuck — usually corrosion between the pawl and its pocket. If the cable doesn’t move enough, it’s stretched or misadjusted. Adding Capacity with Rotary and Challenger
When a shop with existing hunter car lifts is ready to add a bay, we quote from the platforms we actually stock and install: Rotary and Challenger for commercial dealers and body shops, with BendPak and Atlas available for hobbyist and home-storage buyers. The Rotary SPO12 is our workhorse 12,000 lb 2-post for general repair. The Challenger CL10 is a 10,000 lb symmetric that fits tighter bays. Both are ALI-certified with parts networks we can support long-term.
What we tell fleet owners in Ankeny, Waterloo, Sioux City, and Council Bluffs: don’t try to match the incumbent brand just for consistency. Match the workflow. If the new bay is going to run alignment work, we spec an alignment-ready 4-post regardless of what the other bays run. If it’s a general repair bay, a 2-post asymmetric wins every time. The technicians adapt fast — the lift controls are similar enough across major brands that cross-training is a non-event.
Parts Sourcing for Older Hunter Car Lifts
The wear items on any older 4-post are predictable: primary lifting cables, safety latch cables, latch pawls, sheaves, hydraulic seal kits, and power unit relays. We stock generic cross-reference parts for most of these across brands, because 4-post geometry converged industry-wide and cable specifications overlap more than the manufacturers admit. When a customer sends us a photo of the cable end-fitting and a measurement, we can usually cross-reference to stock inventory within a day.

Installation Prep When You Already Have Bays
Adding a new lift to a shop that already runs hunter car lifts is easier than a first-time install — the electrical is often already in place, the compressed air is plumbed, and the concrete has been proven under load. What we still verify: slab thickness and PSI in the new location (minimum 4-inch, 3,000 PSI cured for most 2-post installs, thicker for heavy-duty), ceiling height for the specific lift model rise height, and bay width for the post spacing.
Shops in Davenport, Dubuque, Iowa City, and across east-central Iowa often already have three or four bays fitted out, and the new bay just slots into an existing footprint. Even so, we do a site walk before we quote install labor. It’s the difference between a clean one-day install and finding out on install day that the slab is too thin at the fifth bay because the addition was poured to a different spec. We spot that ahead of time, and the quote reflects reality — not a best case that falls apart on the schedule.
