The single most expensive part on most vehicle lifts is the hydraulic cylinder. It is also the part shops know the least about, because when it works nobody thinks about it, and when it fails it fails hard. If you are trying to spec a hydraulic cylinder for car lift repair, or trying to decide whether to reseal what you have or replace it outright, this guide walks through the decision.
What the cylinder does on a lift
On a 2-post lift, one cylinder does the lifting on the powered column while cables balance the opposite side. On a 4-post, one cylinder pulls one corner and cables raise the other three. On a low-rise or mid-rise scissor, two cylinders (sometimes one, sometimes four) drive the scissor mechanism directly.
In every case, the cylinder is under high pressure every time the lift raises. It is also under load during hold, because the mechanical safeties do not carry weight while the lift is descending onto them or lifting off them. That combination of cyclic pressure and constant load is what wears the seals and rod out over time.
Common failure modes
Most cylinder problems fall into one of four categories.
Rod seal weep, where hydraulic fluid appears on the outside of the rod above the gland nut and drips down the barrel. This is the most common failure and the easiest to fix with a reseal kit. Bypass, where the piston seal inside the barrel is worn and pressure leaks past the piston internally. The lift creeps down under load with no external leak. Rod scoring, where the chrome plating on the rod is scratched, pitted, or corroded. Scoring will chew through a new seal in weeks. Barrel damage or dents, which is usually a total loss for the cylinder because it cannot be honed back to spec economically.
Diagnosing which one you have is the first step in spec’ing the correct hydraulic cylinder for car lift repair or replacement.
Reseal or replace
Rod-seal weep with a clean, unscored rod is a reseal job. Buy the manufacturer’s seal kit for your specific cylinder, drop the cylinder off the lift, unscrew the gland nut, pull the piston, replace the seals, and reassemble. Two hours of tech time and a modest parts cost.
Internal bypass with a clean rod and barrel is also a reseal, this time focused on the piston seal. Same procedure.
Rod scoring, barrel damage, or corrosion pitting means replacement. A reseal on a damaged rod is a temporary fix that costs the same labor to redo six months later. When we spec a hydraulic cylinder for car lift service, we always inspect the rod and barrel with the cylinder open before ordering seals. Nobody wants to do the job twice.
Identifying the correct cylinder
A hydraulic cylinder for car lift is model-specific. Rotary uses different cylinders across its SPO, SPOA, and later series; the older SPOA10 cylinder commonly cross-references to Rotary N346 and its variants. Challenger 2-post lifts use their AL cylinder family, with lengths and porting that vary by model and year. BendPak and Atlas 2-post lifts each have their own cylinder families that do not cross to Rotary or Challenger.
To identify the correct hydraulic cylinder for car lift replacement, we need the lift make, exact model number, serial or manufacturing year, and if possible a measurement of the cylinder itself: overall retracted length, stroke, bore diameter, rod diameter, and porting style and thread size at each end.
Ordering by measurement when the lift tag is gone
On older lifts with a missing or unreadable serial tag, measurement-based identification still works. Retract the cylinder fully, measure pin-to-pin. Extend it fully, measure again to get the stroke. Measure the rod diameter and the barrel outside diameter. Photograph the ports and any tags on the barrel. Send those to us and we can usually match to a known cylinder inside a business day.
What else to do while the cylinder is out
Cylinder removal opens the door to jobs you would rather not schedule twice. When we pull a cylinder on a 2-post lift, we plan to also inspect the equalizer cables (they are the same age as the cylinder and often at the same wear point), flush the hydraulic fluid, replace the filter if the lift has one, and inspect the hoses for cracks near the fittings. That bundle takes the lift from suspect to like-new in one visit.
