Worn or Damaged Seals Are the Number One Cause
Of all the hydraulic cylinder leak causes we see in the field, worn seals top the list by a wide margin. Every time the cylinder cycles, the rod seal and piston seal rub against metal, hydraulic fluid, and whatever grit has worked its way past the wiper seal. Over thousands of cycles, that seal material hardens, cracks, or simply wears thin, and fluid starts finding a way past it. This is normal wear, not a design flaw, and it’s the reason seal kits exist as a standard maintenance item rather than an emergency part.
The tell here is usually a slow weep rather than a sudden gush. You’ll see a film of oil around the rod or at the base of the cylinder, and the lift may creep down slightly overnight. If you catch it early, a seal kit replacement is a straightforward repair that most shops can do themselves with the right tools and a little patience. Wait too long, though, and the leaking fluid can carry contamination further into the cylinder bore, scoring surfaces that then need more than just new seals. Bent, Scored, or Corroded Rods
A bent or scored piston rod is one of the more serious hydraulic cylinder leak causes because it usually means physical damage rather than simple wear. If a lift has been overloaded, hit at an angle, or run with a vehicle positioned off-center, the rod can flex just enough to throw the seal contact pattern out of alignment. Even a few thousandths of bend is enough to create a leak path that no amount of seal replacement will fully solve.
Corrosion is the other half of this problem, especially in Iowa shops that deal with road salt tracked in on tires all winter. Pitting on the rod surface acts like sandpaper against the seal every time the cylinder moves, and it only gets worse with use. If you run a flashlight along the exposed rod and see rust spots, pitting, or a visible bend, that’s not a seal-kit fix — that’s a rod or full cylinder replacement conversation. Cracked or Porous Cylinder Housings
Less common but worth ruling out: the cylinder housing itself can develop hairline cracks or porosity, particularly on older cast units that have seen years of temperature swings in an unheated bay. Vibration from daily lift cycles can gradually loosen a fitting that was torqued correctly at installation, and the o-ring or crush washer at that connection point degrades with age just like any other rubber component.
Before you assume you’re dealing with an internal cylinder problem, wipe everything dry, cycle the lift a few times, and watch each connection point closely. A fitting leak will usually show fluid pooling right at the joint rather than running down the length of the rod. These are quick fixes — a new o-ring, a fresh crush washer, or simply re-torquing to spec often solves it completely, and it costs a fraction of a cylinder rebuild.
Contaminated or Wrong-Spec Hydraulic Fluid
Fluid contamination is an underrated entry on the list of hydraulic cylinder leak causes. Dirt, metal shavings, or water that gets into the reservoir travels straight into the cylinder and accelerates seal wear from the inside. Using the wrong viscosity fluid, or mixing fluid types over the years as reservoirs get topped off, can also cause seals to swell or shrink slightly, changing the fit and creating a leak path that wasn’t there before.

Overloading and Improper Lift Use
Pushing a lift beyond its rated capacity, even occasionally, puts extra strain on the cylinder that it wasn’t built to handle. That extra pressure can force fluid past seals that would otherwise hold fine, and over time it accelerates wear on the rod and bore alike. When to Diagnose Yourself vs. Call for Help
Not every leak needs a service call, but knowing where the line is matters. A slow seep with no drop in lift height overnight is usually fine to monitor and schedule a seal kit for. A leak that’s dripping steadily, paired with the lift sinking on its own, or fluid loss you can’t visually source, is a stop-and-call situation.
